SESSION SPOTLIGHT
Crowd Funding, Technology Startups and Cooperatives: A New Era of Innovation?

Join us at the Daylong Development Intensive for this session!

High-tech startups structured as cooperatives create a whole new set of possibilities and questions: global markets, high growth, manufacturing, new products and services, R&D, innovation. Technology ventures have the opportunity to be socially and environmentally responsible in their legal charter. They also require funding on a scale that has so far been difficult to pull together for cooperatives. The new JOBS Act may be changing this. Instead of conventional VC (venture capital), could it be that we are seeing the emergence of "CV (community venture)" funding?

This session explores what's happening with technology innovation and cooperatives around the world, focusing on crowd funding as a potentially game-changing strategy for financing. The session will include a brief presentation and Q&A with three speakers. Luan Cox will present GreenUnite.com's crowd funding platform for projects focused on sustainability; Michael Peck from Mondragon USA will explore how the world's largest worker cooperative approaches technology and innovation; Jon Guice of Combined Power Cooperative will discuss their model for a renewable energy cooperative. Following will be a panel discussion about crowd funding and other creative financing options, and implications for/of co-ops and the JOBS Act.

Date and Time: Friday, June 22, 2pm
Location: Mass. Institute of Technology, Room 3-270
Speakers: Luan Cox, GreenUnite; Michael Peck, MAPA Group; Jon Guice, Combined Power Cooperative

The Discover Roxbury Civil Rights Tour

This year, in addition to opportunities to tour the Equal Exchange HQ and see local Boston cooperatives, we're thrilled to connect with the Discover Roxbury Civil Rights Tour.  Here's how Discover Roxbury describes it:

"Boston's Black community has been on the move politically, socially, and artistically since 1638. Our trolley tour travels through three centuries of Boston's historic Black neighborhoods. We follow the progression of the Black churches, reveal the struggles of the Civil Rights movement, and introduce participants to the movers, shakers, and strivers in Roxbury's Black History. Highlights include the former residences of Martin Luther King, Jr and Malcolm X, and a visit to the Museum of the National Center of Afro-American Artists."

If you're thinking about it at all, please come! We'll need to get a minimum of 30 people registering for the tour to do it.  Participation is limited to 50 people.
