October 2014
Issue: #24

In India, this full moon is the Kumar Purnima, the harvest festival which marks the end of the monsoon season.

This is a traditional celebration of the moon and is also called the 'Kaumudi' or moonlight celebration.

According to an old folktale, there was once a king who was in great financial straits.  The queen observed a fast and night vigil over this full moon, and worshipped Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth.  The king and queen were then blessed by the goddess and regained their prosperity.

It is also believed that on this day the moon rays have certain healing properties of nourishing the body and the soul.

Yogini Kaliji's recent trip to India was a whirlwind-- first to Mysore in the south, to celebrate the 9-day festival of DEVI energy, Navaratri, with Sri Swamiji.

Then through Delhi, where Kaliji gave an impromptu demonstration in the airport in front of a statue celebrating the birth (and re-birth of yoga).

Then to the holy city of Haridwar, where Yogini Kaliji was the opening presenter and honored guest at the world's largest yoga conference.

And finally to DevPriyag, in the foothills of the Himalayas, where we took an early morning dip in the Ganga.

Message from Yogini Kaliji

I just completed my 25th journey to India. In India, it is like going back in time and yet, at the same time, everyone is brought into the present moment. India, vast in culture and color with 50 languages, allows us to feel it is our first visit. Twenty-seven yoga students joined the inspiring 2-week tour. Highlights included: 6:30 AM TriYoga practice in tropical paradise followed by Navaratri performed by Sri Swamiji; Ayurvedic massages; Indian-style vegan cuisine and colorful shopping sprees;  the famous arati at the Ganga River located in the vegetarian city of Haridwar; and a dip in the cold waters that form the Great Ganga surrounded by the vast Himalayas. With such a wonderful, inspiring journey, we are already planning the next India retreat.

For another upcoming tour, join us in Sydney, Australia for the Healing & Meditation Music concert at the Sydney Opera House. Sri Swamiji has performed at prestigious concert venues throughout the world such as Lincoln Center, The Esplanade, and The Royal Albert Hall. Sri Swamiji is accompanied by violin maestro Dr. L. Subramaniam, and the Celestial Message Troupe.

John & Santoshi returned to Moscow for the continuing Basics Teacher Training.  Long-time teachers and first-time flow-ers join together to experience the Fire, Air and Space Series.

This weekend completed the Level 3 (Fire) teacher training intensive at TYC Santa Cruz with Nandi & Tarini.  On Saturday night, the renowned Batish family performed--

everyone enjoyed their masterly performance.

Nandi teaches the next weekend (Series 4) of the ongoing Basics teacher training intensive October 17-19 at TYC Santa Cruz.
Johanna Schuhbauer
and Claudia Heidmann-Peter led their annual retreat to Sylt-Klappholttal on the beaches of the North Sea. Students enjoyed a week of yoga immersion in a beautiful, natural setting.

And this Yogi studies TriYoga  in Germany and asked her teacher all about Kaliji.

She also wrote a letter:

Dear Kali Ray:

I like yoga!  And can

already bring my foot to neck.

Many Greetings, L---

PS-Come for a visit!

Her teacher sent this picture of the little flow-er chanting "OM."

Millet Kasha with Pumpkin

As autumn turns to winter, try this warm, nutritious grain for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

1 1/2 cup millet, rinsed and drained
3 1/2 cups water and nut milk (soy, almond, hazelnut or coconut). For creamier porridge, use more nut milk.
1 small butternut squash or pumpkin, peeled, seeded and cubed
1/4 cup dried fruit (raisins, figs, dates, dried cranberries)
1/4 t salt
Sweetener to taste

In a medium pan, combine millet, nut milk and water, squash, fruit, salt and sweetener. Bring to a boil then turn heat down to a simmer.  Cook, stirring frequently, for 15-20 minutes until millet and pumpkin are soft. Add more liquid as needed.
Serve hot or warm with vegan margarine or maple syrup.
