VIDEO: Reflections on the Fall Semester
The Taft School mission—the education of the whole student—was at the heart of every action and decision made this fall. On-campus protocols included mask wearing at all times in all public spaces; physical distancing; and a three-pronged testing strategy to keep the more than 700 on-campus students and employees safe. The approximately 100 students who attended Taft remotely were able to do so thanks to the rewiring of many spaces to include cameras in all classrooms. “The school functioned in a hybrid manner with students on campus during a global pandemic and we’ve done so in a way that is safe and healthy and met the school mission and for that we should be very proud,” Head of School Willy MacMullen ’78 said in a recent video reflecting on the fall semester.
Rhino Crash 2.0 Brings Tafties Together Virtually
Taft’s Alumni Office has worked hard to keep our community connected in ways both fun and meaningful during this challenging time. Rhino Crash 2.0: Virtual Talks, Teachings, and Time Together with Talented Tafties has been an effective platform for doing just that. Using the newly ubiquitous Zoom platform, alumni have led friends and peers through virtual book talks, wine and bourbon tastings, art and cooking classes, and more. There have been cultural pursuits, intellectual endeavors, and purely social gatherings. The virtual sessions are recorded, and available to the community in our RhinoCrash 2.0 library
Rising to the Challenges of a Year Like No Other
The reopening of Taft’s campus after six-months was the culmination of months of intensive planning initiatives; the constant monitoring of WHO, CDC, and state coronavirus restrictions, recommendations, and guidelines; and the deep commitment of Taft’s administration, faculty, and staff to reconnecting our community in the safest manner possible. That meant—among other things—bringing new and returning students back in phases and wading through “practice days” to be sure every eventuality had been considered.
