Executive Summary of the DEI Strategic Planning Committee Audit
Taft's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Strategic Planning Committee (DEISPC) recently completed an institutional audit of Taft's DEI practices. The committee looked at six areas of school life: Academics; Admissions; Alumni Relations; DEI Resources; Faculty Recruitment, Retention and Training; and Student Life. An executive summary of the audit, which includes affirmations and areas of improvement for each of the six areas, is now available on the Taft website.
Charmaine S. Lester '07 Elected to Taft's Board of Trustees
Taft alumni have elected Charmaine S. Lester '07 to serve her alma mater as the newest member of the Board of Trustees. Introduced to Taft through an academic enrichment program called New Jersey SEEDS, Charmaine arrived on campus as a lower mid. Her time at Taft, she said, laid the foundation for a career dedicated to social impact.
Commencement 2021
Taft’s 2020-21 academic year was certainly a year unlike any other, with students studying both on campus and remotely from around the world. On-campus protocols in place to protect those learning and living at Taft changed throughout the year based on changes in local health conditions and our knowledge of the virus, but mask-wearing and physical distancing were the norm throughout the year. The year ended with an outdoor Commencement ceremony for the Class of 2021.
Summer Renovations
Campus is abuzz with summer construction, including renovation of athletic facilities. Thanks to the generous philanthropic investment of Taft alumni, parents, and friends, a significant renovation of Camp Field, Snyder Field, and the rink in Odden Arena is underway. Renovations began at Camp Field last month with the removal of the 13-year-old turf. "Given the age of the field and the fact that the school had made spot-repairs to the turf in recent years, this project was much needed," Head of School Willy MacMullen '78 said of Camp Field. Snyder Field will be converted to a turf field, a change that will help ameliorate longstanding drainage issues and degradation of soil conditions over the years. In Odden, the Olympic size playing surface will be replaced with a slightly narrower NHL size playing surface, which is the standard for secondary and collegiate hockey programs.

Looking Ahead to the 2021-22 Academic Year
We look forward to welcoming new and returning students to Taft’s campus this fall. With COVID vaccination required of all students and employees, we expect that the 2021-22 academic year will be more like 2019 than like 2020, but will continue to follow some COVID protocols to best protect the entire Taft community.
