Welcome to DairyTrace TagTips - quick tips, helpful hints and FAQs to help you understand the most efficient ways to use your traceability tools.

It’s fall show time!

This means people and animals from different places coming together to celebrate agriculture through fairs and exhibitions. In these settings, there is a higher likelihood of infectious diseases spreading, such as influenza viruses.

Currently, while highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has not been detected in Canadian dairy cattle, animal movements between premises is a recognized transmission link in its spread among US dairy herds.

That’s why reporting animal movements is more crucial than ever. When participating in a fair, the dairy producer is responsible to report the “move-in” event when the animal returns to the farm. Additionally, it is highly recommended to report the “move-out” event to DairyTrace even if they are only leaving temporarily.

For more tips on reporting movements linked with shows & fairs, see last September’s issue of TagTips:

For biosecurity precautions, before, during and after a show or fair, to help prevent the spread of HPAI, refer to the documents linked here from Animal Health Canada.

A dedicated traceability system like DairyTrace gives us the ability to identify an animal’s current location and where it’s been, enabling faster response in an emergency. In the event of disease such as HPAI, data that is accurate and up to date in DairyTrace means that we can respond quickly to contain and prevent further spread across the country.
