End Of An Era: Doan Award Winning Journalist David Geiger Completes Tenure With Report

After nearly 10 years of producing and hosting the Agribusiness Report, David Geiger will complete his duties with the daily ag news program on May 19.

Geiger was hired in 2013 as a multimedia journalist and part-time host of the Agribusiness Report. Shortly after that time, he then took over all duties of the program and for most of his time with the association wrote, shot video, edited, produced, and hosted the show himself. During that time, Geiger travelled to China to produce programs about the international ag market there, produced a documentary on the life of a soybean as it travelled from a US farm field to South Korea, and won the prestigious NAFB Doan award in 2021.

Earlier this month, Geiger started a new position with WHO Radio as part of the Big Show. We wish him all the best as he begins a new adventure and a great opportunity to further his career. We say thank you to Geiger for all of his great work over the many years. He will be missed!

Agribusiness Report Production Ends

With the departure of Geiger from the Agribusiness Report, the AAI Executive Committee has decided to end production of the program. The three minute daily ag news show was seen by television viewers in 70 counties in Iowa in three television markets and ran a total of six times each day. Ending the production of the program will alleviate both personnel and time constraints as AAI focuses on core missions to support association members.

The final program will air on Friday, May 19, 2023.

Busch Light Corn Cans support farmers through Farm Rescue

Source: AgDaily

Farmers and ranchers are usually excited to receive an acknowledgment from major companies such as Anheuser-Busch. Busch Light cans are trading some silver and blue for their fan-favorite Busch Light Corn Cans.

Busch Light is launching these cans for the fourth year to honor and celebrate America’s farmers who work tirelessly to grow food for their communities and to raise awareness and funding for Farm Rescue to continue its mission of providing critical aid to farms in crisis.

“Farmers are truly the backbone of America, and Busch Light recognizes it has a responsibility to support the agriculture community. Since the inception of Busch Light’s relationship with Farm Rescue in 2019, the brand has delivered nearly $1 million in donations!” shared Anheuser-Busch.

For each case of Corn Cans sold through July 2023, Busch Light will donate $0.25 — up to $200,000 — to its long-time partner Farm Rescue.

Since 2006, Farm Rescue has helped nearly 1,000 farm families in crisis in seven states.

House Bill Considers Making Corn Starch Ethanol An Advanced Biofuel

Source: Brownfield Ag News

A bill introduced in the US House this week aims to level the playing field for corn starch ethanol.

The Fuels Parity Act introduced by Representatives Nikki Budzinski and Eric Sorensen of Illinois, Mariannette Miller-Meeks of Iowa, Stephanie Bice of Oklahoma and Wesley Hunt of Texas would allow ethanol from corn starch to be classified as an advanced biofuel.

Dave Loos with the Illinois Corn Growers Association tells Brownfield it would give corn farmers more access to the domestic market.

“I think it’ll be a lower cost competitor to the other advanced biofuels. So therefore, the refineries would tend to use more corn starch ethanol in meeting their requirements under the Renewable Fuels Standard.”

The bill would also modernize the Renewable Fuels Standard by requiring the Environmental Protection Agency to use the Argonne GREET Model to determine the greenhouse gas emissions of biofuels.

Loos says they have pushed to implement these improvements for several years, and it is encouraging to see bipartisan support from both Corn Belt and Oil Patch states.

“What I’m seeing, when it comes to liquid fuels, is more and more conversations between corn ethanol and the oil industry in making sure that we have a future in the transportation sector by working together.”

Ukraine Black Sea grain deal extended for two months

Source: Reuters

The Ukraine Black Sea grain deal has been extended for two more months, in what U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres hailed as "good news for the world," a day before Russia could have quit the pact over obstacles to its grain and fertiliser exports.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan announced the extension in a televised speech and it was later confirmed by Russia, Ukraine and the United Nations.

The flow of ships through the corridor had been grinding to a halt during the last few days with the deal set to expire on Thursday.

"The continuation is good news for the world," the U.N.'s Guterres told reporters on Wednesday.

The United Nations and Turkey brokered the Black Sea deal for an initial 120 days in July last year to help tackle a global food crisis that has been aggravated by Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, one of the world's leading grain exporters.

Moscow had initially appeared unwilling to extend the pact unless a list of demands regarding its own agricultural exports was met.

"This is a chance to help ensure global food security, not in words, but in deeds. First and foremost, to help the countries most in need," Russia's foreign ministry said, confirming the extension.

"Our principled assessment of the Istanbul agreements of July 22, 2022, has not changed and the distortions in their implementation should be corrected as soon as possible."

Biden unveils ambitious rural energy initiative

Source: Feedstuffs

solar_panels_3.jpg

The Biden administration will invest $11 billion toward rural clean energy through two new programs announced Tuesday. They will be funded by the Inflation Reduction Act. Administration officials say the new initiatives are the largest investment in rural electrification since President Franklin Roosevelt’s Rural Electrification Act of 1936.

“This new funding from the Inflation Reduction Act shows that President Biden, and our entire administration, is serious about investing in rural America,” Senior Advisor to the President for Clean Energy Innovation and Implementation John Podesta said. “This announcement embodies what the Investing in America Agenda is all about—building a clean energy economy that works for everyone.”

Both programs will be managed by USDA. The Empowering Rural America program, dubbed the “New ERA,” will allocate $9.7 billion for rural electric cooperatives to fund renewable energy systems, zero-emission and carbon capture systems. Eligible entities may submit letters of interest between July 31 and Aug. 31.

The Powering Affordable Clean Energy program, commonly referred to as the PACE Program, aims to make clean energy more affordable to vulnerable, disadvantaged and tribal communities. It will provide $1 billion in partially forgivable loans for renewable energy developers and electrical service providers to help finance large-scale projects. USDA will accept letters of interest between June 30 and Sept. 29.

“The Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to cleaner energy provides rural communities with an affordable and reliable power grid, while supporting thousands of new jobs and helping lower energy costs in the future,” Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said. “These investments will also combat climate change and significantly reduce air and water pollution that put children’s health at risk.”
