View Recording: New Pesticide Mitigations, Labels, and Bulletins (Oh My!) - North Central IPM Center Pests and Progress Webinar | |
New Pesticide Mitigations, Labels, and Bulletins (Oh My!)
Speaker: Dr. Gretchen Paluch, Pesticide Bureau Chief at Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship
Watch Recording
Dr. Paluch shares the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) goals and progress related to protecting ESA-listed species, including the EPA’s workplan, Herbicide Strategy, and Vulnerable Species Plan. The EPA is also working on additional strategies for insecticides and rodenticides. All of these documents have come about very quickly, and it’s helpful to understand how they relate to and support the new rules related to pesticide applications.
In addition, Dr. Paluch talks about changes that landowners can make so that pesticides can continue being used to manage pests. She talks about the Mitigation Menu that is available from the EPA, the importance of making use of the Bulletins Live! Two website, and how to keep up on continuing changes. Landowners are likely going to need support interpreting the new practices and mitigations. This webinar will help you prepare to answer their questions.

The House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure finalized a new Water Resources Development Act. After months of back and forth between Republicans and Democrats, the Committee crafted a bipartisan compromise with their Senate T&I Committee counterparts and members of the House and Senate Environmental and Public Works Committees. Lawmakers are hopeful the bill will have enough support to clear the full House and Senate and be signed into law.
House T&I Committee Chair Sam Graves, R- Mo., says the legislation will deliver critical water resources and infrastructure improvements to communities across the country. That includes improved ports, levees, navigation channels, flood protection and more. He says the bill also includes reforms to streamline Corps of Engineer processes, reduce red tape and ensure projects are completed faster.
This is the sixth WRDA bill Congress has passed since 2014. The biannual legislation authorizes the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Civil Works Program to proceed with projects aimed at improving ports and inland waterway navigation. It also authorizes flood and storm protection initiatives as well as other water infrastructure projects.

Containerized imports are expected to continue to surge through U.S. ports into the new year as shippers look to beat a possible strike by East and Gulf Coast longshore workers and planned tariffs by the incoming Trump administration, according to a new forecast.
October volume totaled 2.25 million twenty-foot equivalent unit through ports covered by the Global Port Tracker. That was off by 1.2% from September but ahead 9.3% from October 2023.
The data did not include the Port of Miami, which has yet to report October volumes. The Port Tracker is produced by the NRF and Hackett Associates. The trade group counts Walmart, Macy’s, Target, Mircosoft and Levi Strauss among its members.
“Either a strike or new tariffs would be a blow to the economy and retailers are doing what they can to avoid the impact of either for as long as they can,” NRF Vice President for Supply Chain and Customs Policy Jonathan Gold said in a release. “We hope that both can be avoided, but bringing in cargo early is a prudent step to mitigate the impact on our industry, consumers and the nation’s economy.”

The Biden administration is set to finalize guidance on the 45Z Clean Fuel Production tax credit before President Joe Biden leaves office come Jan. 20, 2025, a spokesperson for the U.S. Treasury Department told DTN on Tuesday.
Reuters and Bloomberg published competing stories on this issue Tuesday -- Reuters reported the guidelines would not be completed and Bloomberg reporting they would be finalized.
"Treasury anticipates issuing guidance before the end of the administration that will enable eligible producers to claim the 45Z credit for 2025," Treasury spokesperson Mike Martinez told DTN on Tuesday.
Biofuels companies, and in particular renewable diesel and biodiesel, have planned to not claim the blender's tax credit that expires at the end of December, because they planned to instead claim the 45Z credit.
