New Alliant Ag Innovation Lab opens for business at ISU Research Park

The new 86,000-square-foot Alliant Energy Agriculture Innovation Lab at the Iowa State University Research Park opened last week, creating a hub for “service-driven innovation,” said Matt Darr, the leader of the university’s Digital Agriculture Innovation Team, which calls the new building home.

The building is located on University Boulevard on the southern edge of the Research Park on the south edge of Ames. It quadruples the space Darr’s team has to work with customers, do research and develop projects, a sizable increase from the space the team previously occupied at the university’s research farm along U.S. Highway 30 west of Ames.

“This facility provides us the space that is proportional to our ambition for how we want to serve in the future,” Darr said. “It gives us the training space to bring in the types of groups and provide them hands-on experiences that are unique and differentiated. It gives us the type of access to labs and shop space to help support Iowa companies the way we aspire to and intend to.”

Swapping Cow's Milk For Plant-Based Could Cost Vital Nutrients

Source: Science Alert

Alternatives to cow's milk made from almonds, soy, oat, and rice have never been so popular. However, a new study suggests more research is needed into the nutritional trade-off that comes with plant-based milk substitutes.

Researchers from the University of Brescia in Italy and the University of Copenhagen in Denmark examined the effects of Ultra High Temperature (UHT) treatments on the nutritional quality of 10 different plant-based milk alternatives (PBMAs), compared to two types of dairy milk.

UHT heats foods to temperatures above 140 °C (284 °F) to sterilize its contents and extend shelf life, but in many cases can also trigger chemical reactions that impact the food's nutritional value.

"Most plant-based drinks already have significantly less protein than cow's milk," says food scientist Marianne Nissen Lund from the University of Copenhagen. "And the protein, which is present in low content, is then additionally modified when heat treated."

CDC confirms first severe human case of H5N1 bird flu

Source: AgDaily

A patient has been hospitalized in Louisiana with a severe case of avian influenza A(H5N1) virus (“H5N1 bird flu”) infection. This is the first instance of severe illness linked to the virus in the United States.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the case on December 13 and announced it today on their website. Since April 2024, there have been 61 reported human cases of H5 bird flu reported in the United States.

Partial viral genome data of the H5N1 avian influenza virus that infected the patient in Louisiana indicates that the virus belongs to the D1.1 genotype related to other D1.1 viruses recently detected in wild birds and poultry in the United States and recent human cases in British Columbia, Canada, and Washington state. This H5N1 bird flu genotype is different than the B3.13 genotype detected in dairy cows, sporadic human cases in multiple states, and some poultry outbreaks in the United States.

Additional genomic sequencing and efforts to isolate the virus from clinical specimens from the patient in Louisiana are underway at the CDC.

While an investigation into the source of the infection in Louisiana is ongoing, it has been determined that the patient had exposure to sick and dead birds in backyard flocks. This is the first case of H5N1 bird flu in the U.S. that has been linked to exposure to a backyard flock.

Hula Bins 490.6276 BPA Winning Entry in 2024 NCGA Corn Yield Contest

Source: Progressive Farmer

David Hula's reign as a corn yield winner continues, and it is a story of resiliency. Although the Charles City, Virginia, farmer faced some tough weather scenarios this year, he produced a 490.6276-bushel-per-acre (bpa) yield to top the 2024 National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) Yield Contest. It is the 13th national high yield win in the contest for Hula.

Hula's winning entry in the irrigated strip-till category came with Pioneer variety P14830VYHR, the same hybrid he planted to set the contest yield record in 2023 with a yield of 623.8430 bpa. He is the only farmer to exceed 600 bpa in the national contest and has done it three times (2019, 2021 and 2023).

Sponsored annually by the National Corn Growers Association for the past 60 years, the 2024 contest produced 27 national winners in 9 production categories from 11 different states. Six of the winning entries exceeded 400 bpa, and the national winning entries represented an average of 372.9541 bpa. There is also a separate pilot category for nitrogen management.
