Dicamba Training Dates Approved

This week, the Pesticide Bureau at Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship approved the first set of sessions for Auxin (dicamba) Applicator Training. The full listing of public events can be found at

Certified Pesticide Applicators can receive training for the restricted use herbicides Engenia, FeXapan and XtendiMax by attending any state approved Auxin Applicator Training course, regardless of the provider. The training for the dicamba-based products is in addition to the regular Pesticide Applicator Certification training.

Applicators must attend a training course approved by the state of Iowa to be certified to apply dicamba-based products in Iowa. There is currently no provision allowing training in other states to qualify as training for Iowa.

New dates will be added to the calendar as they are approved by the Pesticide Bureau.

Iowa Land Improvement Contractors Association (LICA) Annual Convention

Shawn Richmond attended the Iowa LICA annual convention this week to present their contractor members with information on a new joint effort being developed by AAI, LICA, and INREC to assist ag retailers, contractors and their farmer customers with access to private sector tools for designing and building conservation practices such as waterways, ponds, and water & sediment control basins. The goal of the effort is to augment public cost-share resources by providing private sector services which greatly reduce the time and cost of designing practices by utilizing modern design software.

Excellent feedback and input was received by the contractors in attendance, and the LICA voting members and Board of Directors both unanimously voted to continue moving forward with development of this partnership between AAI, LICA, and INREC.

AAI Engaged in 199A Tax Law Discussions

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act passed in December, aka the tax reform bill, has a very small bit of text that appears to have a major impact for many of our members.

A specific provision, 199A, has been interpreted by a number of entities to treat farmer taxation of grain sales to cooperatives in a significantly different way than if it is sold to a private or investor held company.

AAI has already spent many hours listening to members and talking with our affiliate groups who are engaged at the federal level to assure the impact in Iowa is known. We will continue to monitor this provision of the tax bill and engage with those who represent agribusiness at the national level. Additionally, the AAI Grain Committee will be taking up any issues surrounding 199A.

We will keep you informed as more information and clarity becomes known about this issue.

You can take an active part in an AAI committee, by visiting Agribiz.org to sign up for a committee or send an email to [email protected].

IDALS Encouraged By Response to Updated Sensitive Crop Directory
by: IDALS

The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship today highlighted the success of the revamped Iowa Sensitive Crops Registry and encouraged eligible producers and apiarists to register or re-save their data for the 2018 growing season.

Of the 14 states that participated in the FieldWatch program in 2017, Iowa ranked number one in listed beehives, second in apiaries, third in the number of registered producers, and fourth in the number of registered fields.  Pesticide applicators have also embraced the registry: at 513 registered applicators, Iowa ranked first among participating states in this category in 2017.

The registry was made possible by a monetary award presented to IDALS by the Agribusiness Association of Iowa Foundation in April of 2016.  Donors included the Iowa Agriculture Aviation Association, Syngenta Crop Protection, Dow AgroScience, GROWMARK Foundation, Monsanto, BASF, Bayer CropScience, Iowa Wine Growers Association, Crop Production Services, Inc., Helena Chemical, and Meridian Agriculture.

According to David Tierney, Past Chairman of the AAI Foundation, the collaboration and monetary award was a win/win scenario.

"We were really pleased that we could partner with IDALS and FieldWatch to see this new registry become a reality.  It's obvious the state's beekeepers and sensitive crop growers have embraced this system.  And there's no question that the data presented is more accurate as well as more accessible to the applicators," Tierney said. New Ethanol Plant Boasts Greater Efficiency

Favorable construction weather may move up the opening day for Iowa's newest ethanol plant.  Elite Octane LLC, located in Cass County, Iowa, was slated to begin operation in the fall of 2018. But, Nick Bowdish says operations could start as early as May.  "We are way ahead of schedule," says Bowdish, president and CEO of Elite Octane.

The plant is being built on a site that was considered for an ethanol plant nearly 10 years ago. Bowdish says the 102-acre tract features many things needed to make the plant productive, including railroad and utilities access. Read More
