A five-minute summary of AAI, regulation, and industry activities for members of the largest state agribusiness association in the nation. | | Supreme Court Rules EPA Labels Override State Failure To Warn Claims
Today's U.S. Supreme Court’s opinion in Monsanto Co. v. Durnell affirms that the warnings a crop protection product’s label must carry are determined by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) science-based reviews.
In a 7–2 decision, the Court held that the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) preempts state failure-to-warn claims that would require a label change that the EPA has not mandated when the EPA has made a definitive determination on product safety.
The ruling preserves a consistent, nationwide labeling standard that farmers and ag retailers depend on every season.

On Monday, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig made a stop at Pro Cooperative in Pocahontas for a roundtable with farmers and ag retail staff focused on water quality and conservation. These discussions provide valuable insights to accelerate the adoption of conservation practices across the state.
In conjunction with the roundtable, Sec. Naig highlighted the launch of the Greater Des Moines Watershed Program, which will support a series of conservation incentives, cost-share, and targeted investments to improve water quality in the Greater Des Moines watershed.
The first initiative, launched on Monday, is designed to increase the number of cover crop acres planted in a 22 county area north and west of Des Moines. New and existing cover crop users in the qualifying area can receive payments of $25 per acre for up to 500 acres per farmer or landowner. The cover crop incentive is the first of several conservation initiatives that will be rolled out through the Greater Des Moines Watershed Program in coming weeks and is part of the Farm to Faucet legislation that was signed into law on June 1.
AAI is engaged with IDALS to help identify programs that can help accelerate the adoption of conservation practices in this watershed and targeted watersheds across the state. We are soliciting member input on which incentives would be most effective for encouraging precision nutrient management. If AAI members have input on this topic, contact Ben Gleason - bgleason@agribiz.org.

AAI Summer Grain Grading Workshop Aug. 12
AAI Member Registration - $130
Non-Member Registration - $155
WORKSHOP IS LIMITED TO 30 PARTICIPANTS
|
Workshop Registration Open
The AAI Grain Grading Workshops provide hands-on experience for identifying what is, and what is not, considered grain damage by the Federal Grain Inspection Service (FGIS). Participants will spend half of the workshop focused on corn and the other half focused on soybeans.
The workshops are led by an FGIS employee from Kansas City who will briefly explain how official grain grading works along with the mechanisms involved before leading the participants through the various grain damage FGIS is looking for and the implications on the grade of the grain.
The majority of the workshop will be dedicated to hands-on work with grain samples that contain various types of damage and learning to identify specific damage types. Some of the damage training includes: broken or split grain, odor, insect damage, various molds, cob rot, germ damage, heat damage, etc. Participants also learn official criteria for calculating a grade designation and experience calculating that designation.
