AAI Attends Ceremony to Swear In Greg Ibach as USDA Under Secretary

On Monday, Greg Ibach was sworn in as the Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs at an event held in Omaha, Neb. USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue provided comments and officiated the oath of office to Ibach. Until Monday, Ibach had served as the Director of the Nebraska Department of Agriculture since 2005.

Representing AAI at the event were Legislative Committee Chair Matt Caswell, AGP, and AAI staff member Tyler Teske, who attended as guests of Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey.

Ibach will oversee the Agricultural Marketing Service, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), and Grain Inspection Packers and Stockyards Administration.

DowDuPont Exits Ethanol Plant

DowDuPont plans to sell its 30-million-gallon-per-year capacity cellulosic ethanol plant in Nevada, Iowa, nearly two years to the day after the company hosted a grand opening.
The company held a grand opening on Oct. 30, 2015, during which then-Gov. Terry Branstad and other dignitaries were in attendance. Read More

Perdue Responds To Concerns Over Possible NAFTA Withdrawl

There's growing concern in the ag industry that the Trump Administration is positioning itself to withdraw from the North American Free Trade Agreement.

At a Monday news conference in Omaha, Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue was asked about those concerns.

"Well, the President has a unique negotiating style," Perdue said. "Obviously, I believe that his instincts are great in the past, based on his own success, and we are continuing to educate the administration over the benefits of agreements like NAFTA from an agricultural perspective." Read More

USDA Increases Iowa Conservation Assistance

Iowa farmers received $46.4 million in USDA assistance to put conservation practices on their land in the past year through farm bill programs administered by USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service. This is a 20% ($10 million) increase from the previous year.

USDA assistance in fiscal year 2017 will help Iowa farmers add new conservation practices to more than 443,000 acres through funding in four main programs. Read More

Sam Cook Named Inaugural Bühler Lecturer In ISU Ag and Biosystems Engineering

After a national search, the inaugural holder of the Bühler Lecturer will be Sam Cook, who has been working since 2016 as a post-harvest engineer and feed technologist in Iowa State's Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering.

"Bühler is well-known and highly respected for its technologies and systems for grain and feed processing. We're grateful to the company for partnering with us on this new position, as we work to expand academic offerings for the benefit of our students," said Steve Mickelson, chair of the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering.
As the Bühler Lecturer, Cook is teaching a new course this fall in feed processing and technology and leads laboratory sections for a grain preservation course. Read More
