ISSUES AND ADVOCACY ON THE FEDERAL LEVEL

WHAT'S HAPPENING:

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) faces proposed workforce cuts of about 50%, alongside reductions in programs and funding.

These cuts could severely impact affordable housing programs, increasing housing instability, homelessness, and worsening the national housing crisis. Local communities, businesses, and property owners may also suffer financial losses, potentially leading to higher mortgage defaults and foreclosures.

ISSUES AND ADVOCACY ON THE STATE LEVEL

WHAT'S HAPPENING:

Local zoning ordinances often restrict or prohibit housing for individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD), creating costly delays and barriers to community-based housing. These restrictions violate federal law by discriminating against people with disabilities. Currently, the only way to challenge these zoning laws is through litigation, despite Illinois already regulating community integrated living arrangements (CILAs).

HOW YOU CAN HELP:

Support HB1843!

It removes barriers to Community Integrated Living Arrangements (CILAs) and eliminates discrimination against individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD), allowing them to live in the communities of their choice.
