4 Ways to Amplify Youth Voice

in Your Community

1. Listen to Young People.

Recognize the natural leadership abilities of young people. Facilitate their engagement by offering regular and meaningful opportunities for direct interaction. Demonstrate compassion by listening to their experiences with open minds, curiosity, and a desire to learn from them.

2. Expand Opportunities for Creative Expression.

Develop and maintain safe and inclusive spaces where young people feel comfortable expressing themselves without fear of judgment. Support community partnerships to provide resources and spaces for creative activities, allowing youth to engage with their communities in diverse and meaningful ways.

3. Champion Youth Leadership.

Invite young people to contribute their expertise to the design and delivery of mental health services and supports. Provide training, resources, and consistent mentorship to young people as they prepare for important roles, such as peer support providers, board members, and trainers. Ensure equitable compensation for their time and expertise.

4. Uplift Youth Voice in Policy Advocacy.

Empower young people to share their opinions and recommendations on policies that impact their lives and communities. Encourage participation in community organizing and advocacy. Provide training and resources to help youth effectively communicate their perspectives to local, state, and national policymakers.
