In Memory of Dolly:

A Legacy of Imagination

Dolly Parton’s legacy continues to live on through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, bringing the gift of reading directly into the homes of local children.

United Way of Hernando County proudly provided this program to Hernando County families, and currently serves more than 1,000 enrolled preschoolers every single month.

Since bringing the program to our community in 2009, more than 215,000 books have been distributed to Hernando County children — creating countless moments of reading, learning, and imagination.

Dolly’s vision was simple: every child deserves the chance to grow up surrounded by books. We’re proud to help make that vision a reality right here at home.

9-2-5 BREW GOOD, DO GOOD

Join us as we celebrate National Dolly Day on 9/25 (9-2-5) with our friends at Marker 48 Brewing.

GIVE THANKS, GIVE FOOD DRIVE

As we head into the holiday season, we’re once again preparing for our Give Thanks. Give Food community food drive — and we’re looking for collection sites!

Last year, our community came together to collect more than 2,000 pounds of food, all of which was distributed locally to help stock the shelves of area food pantries and shelters.

Your business, organization, school, or community group can help us make an even bigger impact this year by becoming a collection site.

Shred It & Forget It

Have a pile of old files, paperwork, and documents taking up space? United Way of Hernando County is partnering with Campbell & Company to offer a free opportunity to safely dispose of old documents and sensitive files.

There’s no cost to shred — but if you’d like to make a difference while you clean out your files, we invite you to bring a nonperishable food donation for United Way of Hernando County. Donations will help support local neighbors facing food insecurity.

VITA Volunteer Meet & Greet

Thinking about making a difference through your time and talents?

Join United Way of Hernando County on Thursday, October 22, from 9:30–11:00 a.m. for our 2026 VITA Volunteer Meet & Greet at Rookies Family Grille & Bar.

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

When grandparents step into the role of raising their grandchildren, they often find themselves navigating an entirely new journey — and they don’t have to do it alone.

Join us on November 20th for a special seminar designed to connect grandparents raising grandchildren with like-minded individuals who understand the experience firsthand.

In partnership with the Hernando County School District, we’re bringing together information, resources, and community support to help grandparents feel prepared and empowered as they navigate this journey together.

Breakfast & Lunch will be provided thanks to our Proud Partners in Education.

12th Annual Kickball Tournament!

United Way of Hernando County’s "KICK" Start to Early Literacy Kickball Tournament is coming back — and this year, we’re celebrating Decades of Dolly!

Grab your team and get ready for a day of friendly competition, big personalities, and even bigger community impact.

Whether you’re stepping up to the plate, cheering from the sidelines, or sponsoring a team, you’ll be helping United Way strengthen the lives of people right here in Hernando County.

SCAMS ON THE RISE: Protect Your Family

Scams targeting homeowners and families can happen when people least expect them — especially during times of recovery.

Our Long-Term Recovery Group wants to help residents recognize and avoid contractor scams, which can leave families facing financial loss on top of an already difficult situation.

Before hiring someone to make repairs, watch for red flags such as requests for large upfront payments, pressure to make immediate decisions, unusually low estimates, or contractors who cannot provide clear identification, licensing, or references.

Take your time. Ask questions. Verify before you pay. A few extra steps can help protect your family from becoming a victim.

ALICE in Hernando: One Crisis Away

What does it mean to be ALICE?

ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed — households that earn more than the Federal Poverty Level but still do not earn enough to afford the basic cost of living in their community.

New statistics released in June 2026 show that approximately 50% of Hernando County households are at risk, with 39% being ALICE and 11% already in poverty — highlighting just how many local working families are living one unexpected expense away from financial hardship.

For these households, a car repair, medical bill, reduced work hours, or emergency expense can quickly become a crisis.

This is where United Way of Hernando County plays a vital role. Through our work in financial stability, education, emergency assistance, resource navigation, and community partnerships, we help connect local residents with the tools and support they need to move from surviving to stability.

ALICE families are our neighbors, coworkers, friends, and community members. When they thrive, Hernando County thrives.

GETTING TO KNOW UNITED WAY'S BOARD

BOARD Member Spotlight

The United Way of Hernando County Board of Directors is made up of passionate leaders who are committed to creating a stronger, more resilient community. This month, we're proud to spotlight Brandy Homan of Comfort Control Specialists, whose dedication to serving others embodies what it means to LIVE UNITED.

  • Why is LIVING UNITED important to you?

"Living United is important to me because I truly believe we are stronger when we work together. There are so many people in our community who are facing challenges that we may never see, and I believe it’s our responsibility to make sure people know they aren’t alone. To me, Living United is about showing up, giving back, and being part of something bigger than ourselves. I love being able to use my time, relationships, and resources to help make a difference right here in the community I call home."

  • Why do you believe Comfort Control Specialists and United Way make such strong community partners?

"Comfort Control Specialists has always believed that being a local business means being part of the community, not just doing business in it. United Way shares that same mindset. They understand the needs of our community and work to connect resources with the people who need them most. I think we make such a strong partnership because we both believe in showing up and taking action. Whether it’s helping a family, supporting local organizations, or bringing awareness to an important need, we’re both committed to making Hernando County a stronger place to live."

  • What community issues are you most passionate about improving in Hernando County?

"There are so many, but I’m especially passionate about helping children and families who are struggling and making sure people have access to the resources they need. I believe education, mental health, food insecurity, and helping families get through difficult seasons are all connected. I’m also passionate about making sure our community doesn’t overlook the people who are struggling quietly. Sometimes a little support at the right time can completely change the direction of someone’s life. I want to continue being part of the solution and helping create a community where people feel supported, valued, and know that there are people who care."
