This year, we aimed to introduce students to a wide range of career opportunities they might not have considered before. In addition to our Hospitality field trip, we’ve been hosting monthly group mentoring sessions featuring professionals from diverse industries.
In September, Yasmine Julmisse from WPBF shared her journey to becoming a television reporter. As a Wellington High School alumna, Yasmine offered an honest account of her challenges and triumphs. She emphasized that while the path to success wasn’t always smooth, hard work and perseverance made it possible to achieve her goals.
October’s session spotlighted our very own staff members. For many students, it was their first introduction to nonprofit organizations. Each of our team members shared their unique career journeys, highlighting the different paths that led them to their roles. The session underscored the idea that there are multiple ways to achieve a goal.
In November, Detective Bevin England from the Broward Sheriff’s Office spoke to the students. He recounted his immigration journey from Jamaica, where his father served as a police officer. Initially pursuing engineering, Detective England ultimately found his calling in law enforcement. His career path included roles as a corrections officer and positions across various departments before becoming a detective specializing in financial crimes. His story demonstrated that careers can evolve, offering growth and new opportunities.
We’re thrilled to continue these sessions, helping students explore career paths they may not have previously considered!
