The Fresno County Historical Society is proud to be your partner in bringing History and Social Studies to life for your students. Thanks to the vast archive of primary source material collected and preserved by the Fresno County Historical Society for the last 102 years, we are able to support local learning with engaging curriculum and fun activities that can be taught in the classroom or online.

TIME TRAVLERS: 19th Century America from the Gold Rush to the Founding of Fresno County

During the Covid-19 pandemic, your FCHS has been working to ensure our students are still connecting to history and social studies lessons! Although our FCHS annual Living History event was not able to be held in 2020, the Society, along with our generous sponsors, is able to provide the School Days experience through an exciting array of online digital curriculum. Twelve immersive and unique lessons will take students on a journey to the America of the 1800s and will share the story of Fresno County in the 19th century though activities, video presentations and learning about the historical figures of the time.

Elementary Grade Level Lessons

Five complete standards-based units bring history to life by teaching world events through a local lens.

Students will learn about how Fresno County faced the Spanish Flu in 1918 and compare and contrast the experience with COVID-19 today. See the early inventions and innovations that have led to the everyday things we rely on today. Understand the value of telling your story and collect an oral history from a family member. View early Fresno County through photographs and develop visual literacy skills. Study the U.S. Census and learn why it is important to you.

Junior High and High School Lessons

The Fresno County Historical Society has developed a series of lessons focused on the Civil Rights Era with materials that are directly accessible for teachers and students alike.

These lessons bring pivotal moments in national history home to the San Joaquin Valley. Each lesson makes history relevant by connecting it to current social issues. These lesson kits combine a detailed and adaptable lesson plan with several primary sources gathered from local archival collections and newspapers.

This curriculum was developed as part of the Reimagine Educating: American Civics and History Academies for Better Learning and Engagement Grant in partnership with California State University, Fresno .
