Dear Friend,

We are delighted to celebrate the launch of the “Take Your Loved One to the Doctor” campaign, as part of our Black Health Summit in Action series; to feature stories about long-standing collaborations with the Broward Regional Health Planning Council and Live Healthy Little Havana; and to highlight our Chief Strategy Officer’s thought leadership at a national funders gathering.

Each of these campaigns, collaborations, and convenings celebrate and amplify the crucial role that partnerships play in advancing health equity in South Florida.  We are immensely grateful to each organization and every individual that makes this progress possible.

Wishing you a wonderful summer-

Sincerely,

Loreen Chant

Take Your Loved One to the Doctor Campaign Launches in Lauderhill

Earlier this month, the City of Lauderhill recognized June 2025 as Black Men’s Health Month and the launch of the Take Your Loved One to the Doctor (TYLOTD) campaign — a bold, community-led effort powered by the Health Foundation of South Florida to address the urgent health disparities affecting Black men in Lauderhill and Overtown. Inspired by the national initiative started by radio host Tom Joyner, this local activation meets men where they are, building trust and improving access to care.

Introduced during Men’s Health Month and continuing through Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in September, the campaign aims to engage 500 Black men to take themselves — and someone they care about — to the doctor. With a focus on preventive care, early detection, and access to services, TYLOTD is designed to break cycles of medical mistrust and survival-mode health habits.

At the Health Foundation, we’re proud to power this work through our Black Health Summit In Action —because every man deserves the chance to live a longer, healthier life.

Broward Regional Health Planning Council Enrolls Thousands

Access to health coverage shouldn’t be a luxury—it should be a lifeline. In Broward County, where more than 215,000 people remain uninsured, the Get Covered Broward initiative is meeting the moment. With support from the Health Foundation of South Florida, Broward Regional Health Planning Council is helping families enroll in Affordable Care Act coverage—and stay enrolled.

Since its launch, the program has connected 3,829 people to coverage, including 1,101 previously uninsured and 1,410 renewals. By offering multilingual, community-rooted assistance, it breaks down barriers and builds trust.

As Nicole Cohen, Public Information Officer at BRHPC, puts it: “The program empowers families to make informed health decisions. We’re proud of the positive impact on the well-being of Broward County.”

From financial relief to healthier futures, this work is changing lives—one enrollment at a time.

Live Healthy Little Havana Transforms Community

In 2013, Little Havana became one of two neighborhoods selected by the Health Foundation of South Florida to launch a Healthy Community Partnership. That $3.75 million investment sparked Live Healthy Little Havana (HLH), a grassroots movement that continues to thrive.

By hiring local residents and fostering grassroots leadership, HLH built a trusted, culturally rooted team that continues to drive real, lasting change. Together, they’ve:

  • Reached more than 37,000 residents
  • Expanded community gardens and mobile farmers’ markets
  • Developed resident-led strategies to reduce food insecurity and improve overall well-being

“As a Little Havana resident, I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of HLH on our neighborhood,” shared HLH Program Manager Islara X. Souto.

“The Foundation’s long-term support has been instrumental in expanding vital services and building a more resilient future,” added Alejandro Diaz, HLH Community Liaison.

Healthy Little Havana is more than a program—it’s a movement. Rooted in trust. Grown through collaboration. Thriving because of the community. This is what community-led health equity looks like.

Chief Strategy Officer Joins Esteemed Panel at Grantmakers In Health Conference

Philanthropy has a powerful role in shaping a healthier, more equitable future, and the Health Foundation of South Florida is proud to help lead that charge.

We’re proud to share that our Chief Strategy Officer, Dr. Janisse Rosario Schoepp, was a featured speaker at the 2025 Grantmakers In Health Annual Conference on Health Philanthropy—the nation’s largest gathering of health funders.

During the Learning Lab, “Impact Investing: A Tool to Bolster Impact and Catalyze Place-Based Collaboration,” Dr. Schoepp joined national leaders to explore how foundations can align capital with mission to drive systems-level change.

She highlighted the Health Foundation’s investments in affordable housing through its impact investing portfolio and underscored the role of networks like the South Florida Anchor Alliance in advancing place-based strategies to tackle housing challenges, “Impact investing is not just a financial tool—it’s a strategic lever for advancing equity and improving population health at scale.”

A nationally recognized leader, Dr. Schoepp also contributed to and served as a reviewer for the national playbook “Activating Place-Based Partnerships for Equitable Economic Development,” helping other institutions build equity-centered investment strategies.
