Helping Needy Families Have A Brighter Future
The best antidote I know for worry is work. The best cure for weariness is the challenge of helping someone who is even more tired. One of the great ironies of life is this: He or she who serves almost always benefits more than he or she who is served.   Gordon B. Hinckley
With the garage sale season concluded (see below for results!) almost everything we do for the next 10 weeks is dedicated to preparing an amazing Christmas for approximately 220 families-in-need, including 500-600 kids!
The first big step in that process was getting a flyer that announced our Christmas signup at Reed Academy into the hands of nearly every student in Springfield. Next, we had a great signup day last Saturday (Sept. 29 th ) which involved seven hours of taking applications and scheduling home visits for 325 families. Now, a small army of volunteers will conduct five weeks of home visits. Each family is evaluated based on need, and while it’s not an exact science, we have become quite adept at selecting those families most deserving. This process is based on need plus demonstrating effort to help themselves.

From there, we compile detailed shopping lists, begin ordering gifts and arrange for a very active early December of shopping, wrapping and distribution. This process is very layered, requiring many hours of planning, organizing, and a sense of humor! All of this is required to pull off a successful Christmas project.

Please note, when we adopt a family at Christmas, we address the needs of the entire family in addition to children, as we feel helping parent(s) often is required to help the kids. Items provided, if needed, include beds, appliances, kitchen tables & chairs, dressers and couches as well as clothing, new bikes, toys, microwaves, vacuums, pots/pans, dishes, toiletries, food and more. We seek a balance between gifts of short-term value (food, toys, etc.) with those offering lasting benefits. Most importantly, we wish to bring hope and encouragement to the children of these families.
Annual Fundraising Effort
As a member of the Help Give Hope family, you know fundraising is the least enjoyable part of our job, which is why we’ve put so much effort in recent years into The Longest Table, the Arris Pizza/Paul Zurfluh Memorial Golf Tournament, and our multiple garage sales. But as our charity has grown and the services we provide have multiplied, so too have our financial needs. So this is a reminder our once-a-year fundraising effort will take place at the end of this month. If, at that time, you wish to help us financially, it would be greatly appreciated. For over 36 years the Help Give Hope family has been generous beyond measure and we have never taken such kindness and support for granted.
Garage Sale
Another successful Garage Sale is in the books! As you can see by the picture, it was
another stellar year for everyone involved. This group of volunteers, led by Sandy Zurfluh, have worked endless hours since March to make each sale successful. From hanging clothing, folding and pairing linens, dusting and repairing furniture to making sure each item has been correctly priced, this group put in the excess of 2,500 hours
Four “mini” sales known as Friends and Family are held in April, May, July and August and the BIG sales are held over two weekends in June and September. This summer especially, a lot of “sweat” equity went into every hour volunteered at the warehouse.

The success of our sale is also because of YOU ! You continue to give top notch donations that we are then able to sell easily and get top dollar (in the world of garage sales) for. Thank you and continue to remember Help Give Hope when you are ready to get rid of and donate items. We will begin those pick-ups in January.

Credit Unions For Community Golf Tournament
We were again pleased and excited to be one of two recipient charities chosen for the 22 nd Annual Credit Unions for Community Golf Tournament held Friday, September 21 st at Rivercut Golf Course.
This organization has generated hundreds of thousands of dollars for the community over the past 22 years. Last year Help Give Hope received $16,000 as a result of this tourney.

Look for the final numbers in the November newsletter!

Partner Profile
In 1984 Gordon Kinne founded Med-Pay which has become Missouri’s longest-running, independently owned third party administrator and employee benefits agency. As a third-party administrator, Med-Pay provides quality medical, dental and vision claims processing, and reporting capabilities. Additionally, Med-Pay, Inc. offers a variety of other services including benefit plan compliance, claim accounting, network re-pricing, managed care coordination, reinsurance intermediary services, chronic disease management programs, wellness consulting and more.

In addition to success in the business community, supporting local charities is important to Gordon and his wife Laura. Gordon has served as the President of the Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks (and remains on their board), has been active with Care to Learn, and has been involved over the years in many Southwest Missouri charities. Laura works with The Caring People, a ministry providing faith support to single Mothers.

In 2004, Gordon was introduced to Help Give Hope and for the past 14 years he has been one of our rocks. He is a supporter who is always willing to help whenever and wherever the need is greatest. Gordon has been extremely generous, so dependable and a great friend to Help Give Hope.
Gordon and Laura have two sons and a grandson. And Gordon is also happy to report his 93 year old Mother is doing great!

Thank you Gordon and Laura Kinne and Med-Pay!
You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you.   John Bunyan
