An Announcement from ASU Office of the President
As part of our continued commitment to the Thunderbird School of Global Management, Arizona State University announced today the relocation of the iconic school's graduate programs, and the Thunderbird Executive Education program, to a new location on our Downtown Phoenix Campus.
Since the 2015 merger of ASU and Thunderbird we have made great progress. Thunderbird has rebounded from some very difficult days and is now in stable condition. As we look toward the future, we have re-imagined what we can accomplish with Thunderbird and in our view, Thunderbird has a much bigger role to play.
Locating Thunderbird with other ASU schools and departments on the Downtown Phoenix Campus will provide greater community embeddedness and enhanced resources for Thunderbird students and faculty. This move also brings Thunderbird closer to other university schools - it will be the sixth ASU college headquartered on the Downtown Phoenix Campus - and to the private- and public-sector forces in downtown Phoenix that are engaged in international business and non-profit organizational activity.
ASU Enterprise Partners, a separate not-for-profit organization, has initiated conversations with Glendale officials to discuss the creation of a new master plan for the 140-acre site that the Thunderbird campus currently sits on. The Thunderbird brand will remain connected to the West Valley, with our West Campus remaining home to Thunderbird's undergraduate programs.
The campus move reflects the strategic importance ASU places on Thunderbird and its role in the university's global vision. It represents a significant investment in the school's continued excellence long into the future. And it brings Thunderbird into the heart of a community eager for greater international engagement - a place where it can lead.

Thunderbird's new building will be adjacent to the Beus Center for Law and Society and will include more than 90,000 square feet of classroom, meeting, enclave and office space. We expect it to open as Thunderbird approaches its 75-year anniversary in 2021. Prior to that time, we plan to open interim facilities in downtown Phoenix. Specifics on location and timing of the interim facilities will be announced in January.
As you might expect, there are many details that go along with this. We are at the very beginning of this process. For now, you can learn more   here .
We appreciate your continued support of ASU.

Sincerely,
Michael M. Crow

Glendale Announces Interim Director for
Public Facilities, Recreation and Special Events
Glendale City Manager Kevin Phelps, has selected Jim Burke as the Interim Director of the city’s Public Facilities, Recreation and Special Events Department.

Burke brings with him 34 years of experience in the parks and recreation profession and most recently he was the Parks and Recreation Director for the city of Phoenix where he managed a $106.5 million operating budget and oversaw a department with more than 1,000 full-time employees and 900 contract employees. Among other things, Burke played a key role with the development of the extensive land preserve system in Phoenix, execution of several major library projects and he worked on the planning and design of multiple community centers, pool complexes and golf courses.

“We are fortunate to have someone like Jim Burke, who brings many years of experience and leadership, to fill this important role which directly serves the public,” said Glendale City Manager Kevin Phelps. “Jim understands this region and the needs of our residents and I’m really excited to have him join our team.”

“I couldn’t be more pleased to have this opportunity to work with the staff, residents and community leaders in a position that is really about serving families,” said Jim Burke. “I am looking forward to doing the things that impact everyone in the community every day.”
Burke began the transition into his new role this week with the current Director of Public Facilities, Recreation and Special events, Erik Strunk, who after a 28-year career with Glendale, will serve his last day December 21. Strunk has accepted the role as the Deputy City Manager for the city of Peoria.

Burke holds a Bachelor's degree in Range Management from the University of Arizona and a Master's Degree in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix.

Glendale’s Public Facilities, Recreation and Special Events Department provides a multitude of “quality of life” services to residents across the city, including the operation of parks, recreational amenities, festivals and event and civic meeting space and brings in revenue through tourism programs that drive visitors to the city.
An Open Letter from Mayor Weiers
An Open Letter to the citizens of Glendale, city of Glendale Staff, my family and friends:

Last week I received a call from the media asking me to comment on Congressman Trent Franks' pending resignation and wanted to know if I would be forming a committee to run for that office. To say the least, I was stunned. But even more than that, I was forced to look at the possibility of going to Washington DC, and how that would affect the city, my family and friends. It made me look deep inside myself.

Economic Development
Spotlight on - Signature Retail and Entertainment
Signature retail is one of Glendale’s targeted industries and right now the sector is booming. One of the major benefits Glendale offers is the diverse retail options throughout the city. The Sports and Entertainment District, off of Loop 101 and Glendale Avenue, is the location of the Westgate Entertainment District, a vibrant shopping, dining and entertainment experience. In just the past year Tavern+Bowl, Stir Crazy Comedy Club, Popbar, Olive Garden, Twin Peaks, Aloft Hotels and Dutch Bros have all chosen to locate here. Located adjacent to the Westgate Entertainment District is Tanger Outlets at Westgate, home to many top-name brands. The Sports and Entertainment District is home to Cabela’s, a quality outdoor merchandise retailer, and American Furniture Warehouse, a 600,000 square foot home furniture retailer. With the additions of the recently announced IKEA and Top Golf this area is a retail and entertainment hotspot.

Historic Downtown Glendale spans 10 blocks, with many specialty shops located throughout the area. Signature festivals like Glendale Glitters and the Glendale Chocolate Affaire bring many visitors to the area. Unique and award winning restaurants like Cuff, La Piazza al Forno, Desert Rose Steakhouse, Haus Murphy, and JJs Louisiana BBQ have all chosen downtown Glendale to reach their customers.

North Glendale is a very attractive location for retailers. BMW recently selected the area for its newest dealership, located along Loop 101, north of Union Hills Dr. Arrowhead Towne Center located in the area, near 75 th Ave and Bell Road, includes over 1.2 million square feet of retail shopping and eateries. Major anchors include Dillard’s, Macy’s, Sears, JC Penny, H&M and Dick’s Sporting Goods. Retailers are continually investing in the mall, with Lush, Chompie’s and an expanded Apple store all locating in the past few years.

The Finding True Self Project
Leading the project, Scott Foundation Vision Keeper, Rachel Harbour shares The Finding True Self Project ...

In the chaos of their lives, our foster children find themselves surrounded by negative belief systems and self-sabotaging patterns. However, within each of us can be found the loving, limitless self that is buried deep within. The Finding True Self project is all about helping our kids to remove their layers of self-doubt and to find their inner lighthouse of truth and self-acceptance.

Through heart-based and mindful training, the kids tune into their inner self and find the inspiration to widely benefit themselves and others. They learn to reframe their thought patterns to prevent stress from derailing their happiness. They are inspired to be kind to themselves, to others, to nature and to the world.

These teens do not need to be "fixed." Instead, we focus on helping their inner light, natural strengths and compassion to shine forth in their own unique ways. They find ways to understand and be able to recognize human emotions and skillfully make requests that meet the needs of themselves and others. They learn "to see from the inside out", by having strong inner compass that enables them to navigate their ways in our ever-changing world.

The kids gain the skills to interact well with others, tap into the strength of teams, and to leverage the motivations and best qualities of themselves and others. Finally, through a powerful curriculum of entrepreneurial workshops, the foster children create and deliver on practical and action-based plans for giving back by making the world better than they found it.

Speak Up, Stand Up, Save a Life
Since 2009, suicides among youths has increased 81%. One critical factor is the stigma associated with asking for help. On January 16, 2018, students, police chiefs, government officials, parents and teachers will get together to tackle ongoing issues involving bullying, depression, drug addiction and other ongoing issues facing our youth.  Together we can inspire everyone to Speak Up, Stand Up, and help Save a Life!  Help us reach our goal of 5,000 conference attendees in 2018!

Support our youth by attending the Stand Up, Speak, Up, Save a Life Youth Conference organized by  Lily DeBlieux  and learn about the struggles our youth face today. Your small contribution can make a big difference!  #CareEnough
