Acton Island Bridge to Receive Much-Needed Rehabilitation (Spring / Summer / Fall 2023)

The Acton Island bridge, the only land access to the island, will soon be undergoing rehabilitation work. The bridge was built in 1979 and is at a "tipping point" where rehabilitation work will help protect critical structural components. Delaying this work could result in more work and significant disruptions of service

Taking Action - The Importance of Regularly Inspecting Bridges

To ensure the long-term safety and condition of the Acton Island bridge and all structures throughout Muskoka, it is vital to ensure bridges are inspected regularly and any necessary rehabilitation work is done promptly. In Ontario, the standards for bridges are regulated under provincial legislation, which requires all design, evaluation, construction, or rehabilitation work to conform to the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code and the most current accepted engineering standards, guidelines, procedures, and practices.

To determine the condition of a bridge, an inspection must be performed every second calendar year under the direction of a Professional Engineer and in accordance with the Ontario Structure Inspection Manual. Utilizing the results and recommendations from these inspections, the District Municipality of Muskoka has scheduled the Acton Island Bridge for Rehabilitation work during the 2023 season. Taking action now will help maximize the bridge's service life and save time and money in the long run. This work is necessary to ensure the bridge’s structural integrity, safety, and condition.

The District Municipality of Muskoka has retained Tatham Engineering Ltd. to lead these works as it’s assigned, Consultant Engineer. Tatham’s team of knowledgeable and experienced Engineers and support staff are well suited to ensure a high quality of work and that critical considerations have been made to mitigate resulting impacts to the public.

What Can you Expect?

During the majority of the construction season, the single lane bridge will be reduced to a narrower single lane, and traffic signals will be in place. This will likely cause minor delays for those crossing the bridge. However, regular vehicular traffic will be accommodated, pedestrian access will be maintained through installation of a temporary dedicated walkway, and boat access beneath the bridge will be maintained. Construction is set to start after the Victoria Day long weekend in May. Updates on the progress of the project will be provided throughout the season. Residents should plan and expect delays when crossing the bridge during this time.
