Audrey II Coming to Bok Tower Gardens (But Fear Not!)
If your mind is conjuring up images of Little Shop of Horrors and you're wondering if you really want to take a chance on meeting Audrey II, rest easy. According to carnivorous-plant nurseryman Kenny Coogan, "The largest carnivorous plant can eat a small rodent like a mouse 1 or 2 times a year. If you want to feed a carnivorous plant a human, you will have to cut them up really small and have a lot of time on your hands."
On September 2, Tampa author Coogan will share the murderous qualities of carnivorous plants in a presentation and pop-up sale at Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales. It will feature hundreds of pitcher plants, sundews, butterworts, and the infamous Venus Flytrap, Coogan said.
He explained how the plants work. "These plants use appealing scents, leaves, and sticky fluids to trap and imprison insects. Digestive fluids then absorb the prey giving the plant its nutrients." Many of these plants can be grown at home in the backyard, in rain gardens, or, in some cases, on the windowsill.
| Coogan opened his carnivorous plant nursery five years ago, after a career as a middle school science and agriculture teacher. "I love the fact that there are over 900 carnivorous plant species found around the world (except Antarctica) that have evolved to eat animals ranging from protozoa to small rodents. People often think animals are on top of the food chain, but all of these carnivorous plants prove that idea wrong." Florida has dozens of native species of carnivorous plants––more than any other state in the United States, he said. "Carnivory in plants has evolved at least 8 different times in different places independently of one another." |
Coogan has a master’s degree in Global Sustainability and is passionate about Florida’s wildlife and plants. Hundreds of carnivorous plants along with signed copies of Coogan's newest book "Florida's Carnivorous Plants" will be available for purchase after the presentation. "Nepenthes also known as tropical pitcher plants make a great beginner plant. They do well in bright indirect sun. They can be grown inside on sunny windowsills pretty easily. And they are beautiful."

The A.E. Backus Museum has announced the Call to Artists for the annual juried art exhibition, The Best of the Best.
Now in its fifth decade, this fine art competition continues to spotlight the best artistic works in different media by amateurs and professionals from the Treasure Coast and beyond. Each year the independent jury panel finds and rewards excellence, technique, and presentation with cash prizes.
The Museum is accepting artist submissions by advance appointments beginning September 6 on Wednesdays–Sundays until 3:00 pm, through September 29, 2023.
Artists may enter their work in The Best of the Best by submitting into one of four media categories: Oil and Acrylic paintings; Watercolor (including gouache and tempera); Varied Techniques (which includes mixed media, pastel, pencil, pen & ink, printmaking, graphics, collage, and digital art); and Three-Dimensional. There is a $30 entry fee per work. Entries that are juried into the exhibition will contend for cash prizes and 1st-2nd-3rd place awards, with an overall "Best of Show" award.
