It’s that time of year again. Campus is quiet. There are only a few bicycles on the streets. The halls and classrooms are empty. But it’s a joyous time. The class of 2023 has crossed the commencement stage and is embarking on the next stage of life, which is sure to be successful.
I sat on stage for all five of this month’s commencements, and watched each student walk across to applause (and the occasional ringing cow bell) from friends and family. It’s not often we get to see such a procession of happiness and accomplishment, and I never tire of seeing our students succeed. I’ll miss the activity as campus ramps down (a little) over the summer but couldn’t be happier or prouder of our graduating class.
Many of this year’s graduating seniors were among the 2023 undergraduate award recipients who were honored at a college-wide ceremony on Saturday, June 3. The event also saw top graduate students recognized for exemplary mentorship. To all of our award recipients, I say again congrats. What you have accomplished is no mean feat. I applaud you.
This year also saw notable rankings for the University of California, including recognition of UC Davis in the 28th spot among all public and private universities nationally. The 2022-23 year saw its share of challenges, but we looked out for one another and together we made it to the end of the year with time to take a collective bow.
The Biome will be on hiatus until the start of the next academic year. Until then, I wish you all a safe, happy and restorative summer.
Go Ags!
