Dear friends,
I am excited to share the launch of the Central and South East Brooklyn Community Development Corporation (CxSE BK), which was created to promote and prioritize the holistic health of the residents in Central and South East Brooklyn.
Typically, a community development corporation focuses on affordable housing and economic development. I have chosen to focus on health, specifically, maternal, mental, physical, and environmental health. Our health is a different kind of currency – we have all heard of the saying, “Health is wealth.”
Across East Flatbush, Flatlands, and Canarsie
- Expectant mothers receiving late or no prenatal care is higher than the citywide rate, as well as the number of preterm births
-
Additionally, the rates of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and childhood asthma tend to be higher in communities of color.
-
East Flatbush was significantly underserved by cooling centers, with only two open cooling centers available to its 162,400 residents. – Overheated, Underserved August 2022 report by NYC Comptroller Brad Lander
Sadly, despite both the national and local spotlight, we are nowhere near the benchmarks set by advocates to preserve our planet while ensuring the well-being of future generations.
In this bi-monthly newsletter, you will have an opportunity to learn more about our work, community events, local issues, and how to access resources or get involved. It is my sincerest hope that CxSE can be a space where we can exchange ideas, envision an equitable future, and embolden our neighbors to take part in building toward a better tomorrow.
My intention is to contribute to, build on, and amplify the existing community and economic development efforts throughout Brooklyn through information sharing, programming, and advocacy.
You can follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and IG @cxsebk.
Committed to Protecting the People, the Planet, and Prosperity
