To Flush or Not to Flush,
That is the Question!
Flushable wipes and other similar not-so-flushable products are causing problems for wastewater treatment plants around the World. Since the late 1990’s, Delta Township Waste Water Operators have noticed an increase of rags and sand in the digester. Digesters are sealed anaerobic tanks that break down sludge at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. This increase in sand and rags has made the cleaning process for the digesters impossible for inhouse staff. In 2019, the Township contracted with Merrell Brothers to finish cleaning the digester.
Products labeled as “flushable” or “safe for septic systems” do not necessarily mean that they are. These items do not readily break down as they travel through plumbing and they end up getting caught and causing blockages.

Habitually flushing items down the toilet can create significant costs for a property owner and the Township. Properly disposing of items, instead of flushing them all, can save property owners and Delta Township hundreds of thousands of dollars and help preserve our sanitary sewer system.

Delta Township is in the planning stages of major capital improvements to the Waste Water Treatment Plant. While some of these future improvements will help filter these products, you can assist the Township by making sure the following items are put in the trash and not flushed:

  • Biodegradable wipes labeled "flushable"
  • Baby Wipes
  • Paper towels
  • Napkins
  • Facial Tissue
  • Make-Up Remover Wipes
  • Disinfecting Wipes

If it isn’t toilet paper or human waste, do not flush it.

Township Fee 
Schedule Updated
Each year the Delta Township Board reviews the structured fees charged for services. During the December 16 Board meeting, the fee schedule was reviewed and approved to take effect on January 1. Click below to review the 2020 Fee Schedule.

I-496 Construction to
Begin in April 2020

Beginning in April 2020, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is investing approximately $60 million to improve 1-496 between 1-96 and Lansing Road. Work will include reconstructing the freeway and ramps, preventive maintenance on all the bridges in the project area, and making operational improvements to the entrance and exit ramps at the 1-96, Creyts Road, and Waverly Road interchanges.

How Will Traffic Be Affected? 
Work will be done one direction at a time, with eastbound 1-496 closed for construction first. Eastbound traffic will be detoured along Lansing Road from 1-96 to 1-496. Bridge work will require short-term closures and detours of local roads. Alternate routes are advised. Work is expected to run from April through November 2020.

Additionally, MDOT is also partnering with the Ingham County Road Department, Delta Township and Lansing Township to reconstruct Waverly Road between Lansing Road and St. Joseph Highway including the construction of a new pedestrian pathway along Waverly Rd.
Snow Removal, Whose Responsible?
Snow Removal Reminder
Now that the snow has arrived, Delta Township property owners are reminded that they need to make arrangements to clear the snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property.  Section 34-92  of the Delta Township Code of Ordinances requires that snow and ice be removed from the sidewalk within 24 hours of a snowfall. The code applies even if the property is vacant or the building on the premises is unoccupied.

Overnight Parking Ordinance

Please note that no person shall park  any vehicle, including a vehicle used for commercial or recreational purposes, or any trailer on either side of any highway, freeway, street, or roadway located within the township between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. of any day.

A person who violates the ordinance will receive a municipal civil infraction. The civil fine will be set from time to time by the township board by resolution. Current fines are set at $15. Click here to view our overnight parking flier.

Winter Road Plowing in Delta Township
A reminder that Delta Township does not remove snow off of the roadways.
 
Eaton County Road Commission (ECRC) and the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) are the agencies charged with snow removal in Delta Township. MDOT is charged with snow removal for I-96, I-69, I-496 and Saginaw Highway, ECRC is responsible for all other public roadways.
