Broadbent Signal Project Set to Begin this Summer

On March 6, the Delta Township Board approved a cost sharing agreement with the Eaton County Road Commission (ECRC) for the reconfiguration and widening of Broadbent approaches to Saginaw for the purposes of MDOT installing a traffic light at Broadbent and M-43.  The work includes a center left turn lane, drainage work, curb and gutter, the installation of pavement for future bicycle lanes on Broadbent, sidewalk removal and replacement, and other related work.  The road work at the intersection will likely require about four weeks to complete, with closures necessary at the intersection on Broadbent for part of that time.  This work is expected to take place this summer.

The Township and ECRC were notified last year that MDOT had approved a traffic signal at that location, but intersection improvements would need to be made first.  The project has been in the design phase and will soon go to bid.  The ECRC will manage the project with the Township sharing in the cost.
Township Developing New Neighborhood Beautification Grant Opportunity

Delta Township is developing a new grant program in which residential neighborhoods and neighborhood organizations can apply for matching funds for improving their identification and welcome signs to their neighborhood.  Matching funds will be on a first come/first serve basis and typical grant awards will be $500.  It is part of the Township's goal to help create community identity, neighborhood involvement, and encourage and maintain the character of residential neighborhoods.  Details will be available in April.  If you have any questions, please call 323-8510.
Delta Parks and Recreation Set to Apply for Three DNR Grants

In an effort to continue the Township's goals to expand and improve the non-motorized trail system and recreational opportunities, the Township's Parks and Recreation Department is applying for three DNR Grants this year.

The first grant application is for the development of a Mount Hope Park Neighborhood Connector Pathway.  The project will include a shared use pathway that will connect neighborhoods to the park.  This pathway will allow residents and park users' safe access to the park while it is being fully developed.  The proposed project is needed to meet the demands of the growing athletic programs and to provide a recreation facility in the township's fastest growing residential area.

The second grant application is for the development of a Delta Mills Park canoe launch and park improvements.  The project will include the modernization of a section of Delta Mills Park to provide barrier-free access and improved vehicular circulation.  Additionally, the current site will be improved with a new accessible canoe launch site, parking lot with handicap accessible parking and an accessible trail from the parking area to the launch.   Further Improvements will include replacement of playground equipment, basketball court, and fishing pier.

The third grant application is for the development of a Park Connector Pathway on Old River Trail to allow safe, non-motorized accessfrom Webster Road to Delta Mills Park and Hunter's Orchard Park along Old River Trail.  The proposed pathway will connect to existing pathways and bike lanes allowing Hunter's Orchard Park and Delta Mills park to connect to the East/West pathway, Lansing Mall, Delta Township District Library, Sharp Park, and Grand Woods Park.  The project includes a lighted crosswalk on Old River Trail allowing for safer access between the two parks.

Delta Township received three DNR grants in 2016 including:  West Willow Canoe Launch, Phase II of Mount Hope Park, and a new restroom at Delta Mills Park.
Summer Sewer Max Credit

Delta Township grants automatic sewer credits to all residential customers April-September. The process referred to as "Summer Sewer Max", assures summer sewer bills will not increase for seasonal water usage such as filling pools and lawn irrigation.

A "sewer maximum" is established by calculating the average winter usage (October-March). This average is the maximum a customer will be billed for sewer April September. Customers will be charged for full water usage during these months, but the sewer portion of the bill will not exceed the "sewer maximum". Therefore, customers will avoid paying sewer charges for excess water usage during the summer months. In addition, this policy makes secondary irrigation meters unnecessary.

This credit is automatic and does not require you to contact us. However, if you have any questions regarding the calculation of the sewer credit, please contact the Delta Township Accounting Department at 323-8510.
Changes for the Noxious Weed Ordinance take Effect this Spring

As spring approaches we would like to draw your attention to a couple of changes in our Noxious Weed Ordinance.

Last fall, the Delta Township Board passed an amendment to the ordinance decreasing the maximum length a lawn can reach without fines from 12 inches to 8 inches.  Additionally, the commencement of the regulated growing season has been bumped back from April 15 to
May 1.

An annual notice is published in local newspapers during March informing property owners that lawns must be in compliance beginning May 1 and through October 31, or the lawn will be cut by the Township or its agent at the expense of the property owner.

Residents may submit a complaint regarding unmown weeds and grass online here or may call the Township Engineering Department at 517-323-8540 and file a complaint.  Please also direct any questions to the Engineering Department.
