Delta Township Sees High Voter Participation in Michigan Primary

The 2016 Michigan Presidential Primary is behind us. But what a primary it was, with lots of interesting circumstances.  Delta Township saw a 44.2% turnout - historically a great turnout for a primary. In 2012, we saw 5,348 total ballots cast compared to 10,724 ballots in 2016.  There was a greater turnout at the polls with 6,896 voters, rounding it out with  3,828  absentee ballots cast for this election. W hile the large turnout caused other locations across the state to run short in their ballots, Delta Township, along with the rest of Eaton County, was well prepared for this election's participation.

For the first time since 1976, the Democratic party used the Presidential Primary for delegate commitments instead of using a convention/caucus.

Another interesting bit of Presidential Primary information:  in the Absentee Voters the Democratic winner was Hillary Clinton and the Republican winner was Donald Trump while in the polls election day, the Democratic winner was Bernie Sanders and the Republican winner was John Kasich.  Finally, in a Presidential election year, we typically see an increase in people registering to vote in the early fall. This election we saw an earlier interest in registering to vote.

Michigan Election Schedule:

August 2, 2016 - State Primary Election Day
Last day to register for August primary is July 5, 2016

November 8, 2016 - General Election Day
Last day to register for November general election is October 11, 2016

Delta Township Adds  E-commerce Safe Exchange Location
A newly designated parking location has been established in  Delta Township to conduct e-commerce  exchanges . The Delta Township Board voted unanimously on March 7 to create a safe exchange area for person-to-person exchanges.

The E-Commerce Exchange Zone will be located in front of the  Eaton County Sheriff Department's Substation  behind the Delta Township  Administration Building just off of Canal Rd. and Saginaw Highway.

An e-commerce exchange location will allow for Delta Township residents and those traveling from other areas, a safer, more secure alternative when making online connections that result in face-to-face interactions. Additionally, it could also increase the number of participants that utilize e-commerce options.

Signage for the new lot will be installed in the coming weeks and the lot will be under 24-hour surveillance for added security.
Emergency Responders Rescue Furry Friend from Fox Hole
Delta Township Firefighters and deputies from the Eaton County Sheriff Department's Delta Patrol came to the rescue of a curious Jack Russell Terrier named Frances, when the pup became lodged inside a fox hole after her explorations lead her astray. (See photo to the left)

When the owner became aware that her dog had indeed gotten herself stuck underground, Delta Patrol was called. They in turn called the Fire Department, who enlisted the help of Michigan Plumbing which provided a pipe camera to help locate Frances.

Rescue crews dug trenches and widened the holes into the fox den. After nearly four hours of digging the crew rescued their furry friend and a somewhat disgruntled opossum who had been stuck inside the hole with the dog.

Frances' owner, Mary Minor, was extremely grateful for all of the people who assisted in returning her beloved pet to her. On Saturday, Mary and her son treated the rescue crew at the Fire Department to lunch and a visit from their new found friend. (see photo to the right)
2016 Eaton County Road Projects
Slated for Delta Township

In 2014, Eaton County voters passed a local road millage intended to improve the condition of paved local roads over the next 12 years.  The improvements began in 2015, with the resurfacing of approximately eight miles of local roads within the Township.  In 2016, the Eaton County Road Commission is scheduled to resurface approximately eight-and-a-half miles of local roads across the Township.  The list linked below indicates the resurfacing projects scheduled for this construction season.
