Talking to children about violence and war

Graphic images and footage of events unfolding in Ukraine are not easy to process, especially for children and youth. It's even more difficult for those who have experienced trauma or witnessed violence themselves. Parents and caregivers are faced with the challenge of explaining violence and war to children. LACOE's Center for History-Social Studies Education has compiled resources to help children feel more secure and understand the world in which they live.

Art murals inspire, empower students

During Black History Month, which concludes today, Lynwood USD celebrated beautiful new murals at Rosa Parks Elementary and Will Rogers Elementary. Artist Eric “Cre8” Walker created the Rosa Parks mural, which features the words "Prepare, Inspire, Empower."

Parks helped initiate the civil rights movement in the United States when she refused to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Alabama bus in 1955. Her actions inspired the Montgomery Bus Boycott, led by a young Martin Luther King, Jr.

Lilia Ramirez produced the social justice-themed work at Will Rogers, titled "Another World is Possible." "These new pieces inspire our students and improve our schools," says the district.

New Whittier Union HSD superintendent named

The Whittier Union HSD Board of Trustees has selected Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services Dr. Monica Oviedo, who has served the district as a teacher and administrator for 25 years, as the next superintendent.

Oviedo was carefully chosen for her long record of achievement at Whittier Union, the enthusiasm with which she has implemented the district’s vision of doing “whatever it takes” to ensure student success, and her embrace of the ethnic and cultural diversity of the students, parents and community she serves.

“I am humbled, honored and thrilled to serve the Whittier Union students and staff in this new capacity,” Oviedo said. “I am also very grateful to the Board of Trustees for their faith and confidence, and I look forward to continuing to support our collaborative culture so that our students will be successful.”

Are you up to date with your COVID-19 vaccine?

Receiving your initial vaccine series gives you more freedom to work, visit certain venues and, in some cases, travel with fewer restrictions. But getting up to date with all recommended COVID-19 vaccine doses, including a booster dose (when eligible), provides the best protection against COVID-19 and variants like Omicron and Delta.
