Our MARY charmed visitors during Fleet Week TankerTours |
We had a busy Memorial Day week! On the Saturday of Fleet Week, we opened the MARY A. WHALEN for TankerTours in honor of her 78th birthday, and the MARY fascinated and entertained 95 visitors. A special nod to the grandmother who hung out at the reception tent when she forgot her ID and couldn't see the Fleet Week ships. It took 30 minutes to conjole her onto the MARY, but she loved it so much she convinced her daughter and Boy Scout grandson to come aboard, too. "This was the best boat tour ever!" was the response from the grandson, and we made a connection with the Boy Scouts for future visits. Thanks to all the folks who donated at our reception tent and supported Red Hook WaterStories. You can join them -- donate here.
For Fleet Week, we were proud to be a planning partner for the Welcome BBQ for sailors and vets, organized by Jennifer Pinto. We promoted Fleet Week Brooklyn on social media and alerted local retail businesses to prepare for ship visitors and sailors. We installed wayfinding aids and Red Hook info around Atlantic Basin. The Navy says 8,582 visited the ships over the 5-day period, with Sunday and Monday being the big days. Red Hook and PortSide want Fleet Week to return!

RHWS IS COMING! HELP MAKE IT HAPPEN!
|
Please support our Red Hook WaterStories (RHWS) June campaign to raise $20,000 in matching funds! RHWS is the history of Red Hook, Brooklyn via a water theme -- in microcosm, New York City's maritime story. RHWS maps 400+ years of waterfront history and boosts cultural tourism and resiliency, as in helping Sandy-devastated Red Hook prepare for future floods. RHWS gives locals and visitors a new reason to explore the neighborhood.
RHWS is supported in part by funding from Councilman Carlos Menchaca and the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
