Target Coming Downtown?

Fontainebleau Development is in serious negotiations with Target, the Minneapolis-based department store chain, said Jay Fertig, chief development officer for the firm.

"We want them to be there. We think they're a great asset for the city and a great asset for our building," he said.

Target would occupy 25,000 square feet of space on the first floor of the old Kaufmann's building. The retailer is proposing a small format store with a pharmacy at the location. It would offer a range of products, including groceries, apparel, and home goods.

Fontainebleau, owner of the famous Fontainebleau Miami Beach resort, is in the process of buying the Kaufmann's/Macy's building, a Smithfield Street landmark that served generations of Pittsburgh shoppers, from Philadelphia-based Core Realty, which has owned it since 2015.

Mr. Fertig said he expects the property to be in Fontainebleau's hands "not long after the end of the year."

O n contingency for Target is parking, in addition to the two levels below ground the company wants two levels on the third and fourth floors above the first- and second-floor retail.

"Obviously, we have big plans and they're not out of line with what was envisioned for this property five years ago," Mr. Fertig said. "We're just fulfilling what was envisioned for this property five years ago."

About half of the 311 apartment units planned for the redevelopment are complete. Fontainebleau will complete the rest, a job estimated to take four months. Residents are moving into the apartments that have been finished. In addition, The 160-room Even Hotel opened in December.

Mr. Fertig said building out the shell space for Target alone will cost millions of dollars, adding that the overall costs associated with such a historic renovation "tend to multiply as you go." But Fontainebleau is committed to seeing it through once it completes the deal to acquire the property.

"To enter into a deal like this and a vision like this, it takes deep pockets to do this and we have deep pockets" Mr. Fertig said.

John Jackson, of Cushman, Wakefield, Grant Street Associates has been working on bringing Target to this location for a while and will be a panelist at the Northwest Bank Developers Forum on January 27.

We will have updates to this story as they occur.

Handel's Baroque Classic Alcina Coming to CAPA Theater
By: Hattie Charney

The Pittsburgh Opera will be performing George Frideric Handel's Alcina, in the Pittsburgh CAPA Theater in downtown Pittsburgh. The CAPA Theater is the ideal spot for Baroque performances because of how cozy and close the confines are.

The production will run from Jan. 25 until Feb. 2. For a full list of dates and times head over to the Pittsburgh Opera website at pittsburghopera.org/show/alcina

Alcina is about a sorceress who lived on an island with her sister Morgana. Alcina doesn't use her powers for good but for evil; she tricks men into falling in love with her. However, once she tires of these selected men, she turns them into animals or objects.

The audience follows the story of Alcina's most recent crush, Ruggiero, a mighty knight she has used her magic on. The showdown begins when Ruggiero's finacée Bradamante, and her tutor, Melisso, come to the island to bring Ruggiero back home.

Alcina and Morgana do not want to give up the man they tricked thus the audience is taken on a wild ride with twisting turns and wondering if Alcina's evil spell will finally be broken.

Pittsburgh Opera Music Director, Antony Walker, conducts the production while Matthew Haney directs.

Since premiering in 1735, Alcina has only been performed in a small number of cities. These will be the Pittsburgh Opera's first performances of Alcina.

Baroque operas typically feature a pants role, a female singer portraying a young man, and Alcina is no different. Antonia Botti-Lodovico, Pittsburgh Opera Resident Artist, will sing the role of mighty knight Ruggiero.
