News & Reviews
Greetings TC Customers!

We've been overwhelmed by the support you've shown for our new  Friends of Tattered Cover membership program . Both emotionally overwhelmed, and logistically overwhelmed. The program launched August 21, and we weren't quite sure what to expect. As of this writing, nearly one thousand of you have joined... wow!!!

The first batch of welcome packets went in the mail today (Tuesday)--which includes a small gift as a token of our appreciation--so be on the lookout for something in the next few days. We've had a few questions about the FoTC program, and thought we would use this space to answer them:

Q: When is the FoTC member-only party and sale?
A: As of now, the event is planned for sometime in mid- to late-January, or early- to mid-February. Watch your email for the specific date, time, and location. All items in the store will be 15% off during the sale, and all will count toward your gift card rewards.

Q: How do I claim my gift card rewards?
A: Easy. You do nothing. For each $200 milestone you reach, we will create a $15 gift card in your name, and leave it for you at the information desk in the Tattered Cover location of your choice. If you'd like it mailed, we can do that, too.

Q: Why do you require my email address and phone number, and how will you use them?
A: First, Tattered Cover will never rent, sell, or share your email address, phone number, or any personal information collected with your participation in Friends of Tattered Cover, including purchase history, with anyone. Ever. Protecting your privacy continues to be a core value of Tattered Cover.

We use your email address to communicate program news, let you know when you're close (within $30) of a gift card reward, and to let you know when you've earned a reward. We use your phone number as your unique identifier as program participant, in that you give your phone number each time you make a purchase so we know it's you. We will also use your phone number to contact you should your email address not work. That's it.

And finally, and very importantly...

Q: I didn't join the program. Am I still a friend of Tattered Cover?
A: Of course you are! We understand that we are all besieged with sales, promotions, and membership programs from a host of businesses, and not every one of them is for every person. (And for some, the easiest way to shut out the noise is to avoid them all.) We get that. We really do. Customers who enroll in the program will be earning benefits, but we view all of our customers -- regardless of how your interact with Tattered Cover -- as more than friends; we view you as family, and we value your support more than you could ever know.

Thanks as always for being customers, and we look forward to seeing you in the store.

Warmly, fondly, and appreciatively,
Kristen and Len

Adult V.I.B...
by Christina Dalcher

"In Dalcher’s dystopian America, women must adhere to a strict limit of 100 words a day--or submit to government-mandated electroshock. Our heroine Jean McClellan stands by as the leader of a patriarchal Pure Movement rises to power, immersing herself in the cozy den of academia to become a respected neurolinguist. But as working women nationwide are forced into early retirement for the sake of an idealized 1950s husband-and-housewife model, she must watch in horror as her children internalize the dogma, her daughter’s voice dwindling alarmingly day by day. There may come time for a reckoning, however, when the President’s brother faces neurological trouble only McClellan can solve. A thrilling, visceral next read for fans of The Handmaid’s Tale and Naomi Alderman’s  The Power , and a call for action over apathy. Buyer beware: You may find yourself quantifying what you say as you navigate Vox’s uncanny terrain." --  Lainie Formby, Adult Frontlist Buyer
Kids' V.I.B. pick...
by Jacqueline Woodson, illustrated by Rafael LóPez

“There will be times when you walk into a room and no one there is quite like you.” So what do you do next? Multi-award-winning author Jacqueline Woodson shows how to be brave, kind, and open in this poetic portrait perfect for someone starting school—or really, for all kids trying something new. Rafael López’s vibrant and colorful illustrations welcome readers in to any new experience with a warm hug." -- Bethany Strout, Director of Buying

On shelves now...
by Nico Walker

"To say Cherry is gritty and raw is an understatement. When I began listening to it on Libro.FM, I wasn't sure I could get past the use of the "f" word every other sentence, but this novel keeps you hooked into sticking with the sometimes depressing, funny and horrifying story for all 8 hours of listening time. Walker's semi-autobiographical novel follows the main character from high school to Iraq and back home where he becomes a heroin addict and a bank robber. After reading this book I think I have a better understanding of the average service member that DOES come back from war with issues that they find hard to deal with. I also feel like I better understand how someone can slip into a heroin addiction and perhaps wants to get out of it, but can't overcome the physical withdrawal symptoms long enough to get clean of the drug." -- Suzie Mulligan, Colfax Avenue Store Manager
On shelves 9/11...
by Rebecca Serle

"What an intriguing, delightful read. Sabrina's journey within the dinner was relatable and interesting; all of the dinner guests tested and pushed her in different ways. The dynamic of the characters was great, and fit well within the context of the whole story. I did appreciate the sort of easy magical realism that wove its way in. It's nothing too heavy, and a nice, comforting read. It's a light read that I think would be good for book clubs." --  Mikaley Osley, Marketing and Events Manager
September Cookbook of the Month...
by Julia Turshen

"If, like me, you love to cook but are not so great at using up a recipe’s leftover ingredients (I see you, 3/4 bunch wilted parsley and languishing handful of mushrooms), this cookbook will change your life. Organized by meal, the shopping lists make themselves—and each section ends with multiple ideas for how to use (and totally transform) the leftovers, with minimal effort, and using ingredients you most likely already have (i.e. that third of a bag of rice hidden in the back of the cupboard). Julia Turshen is that unicorn of a home cook—someone who does indeed cook at home each night for herself and her wife, but who has also worked on scores of celebrity chef cookbooks and keeps an element of foodie fantasy intact. Simply delicious." -- Bethany Strout, Director of Buying

Indie Next List Picks
This month's #1 on shelves 9/11...
by Wayétu Moore

“It’s hard to describe a novel as wholly original as She Would Be King. A retelling of the birth of Liberia through interconnected stories, the novel combines history, magic, and myth in one engrossing story. Moore’s novel takes you from West Africa to the plantations of Virginia, from Jamaica to Liberia, weaving together the stories of three characters who yearn for power and true freedom. Guided by the ancient wind, all of Moore’s characters challenge and transcend the many faces of oppression, and the story’s profound culmination will leave you in awe. She Would Be King is the kind of novel that lingers with you for days. A must-read!” -- Morgan McComb, Raven Book Store, Lawrence, KS
New in paperback...
by Alice McDermott

“Alice McDermott's dazzling The Ninth Hour turns on the contradictions that confound our need to reconcile with mortality. The empathetic characters, at once agents and benefactors of Christian charity, grow to realize not just the grace but also the hubris of their faith. A stunning work of generational storytelling, The Ninth Hour is compulsively readable and deeply thought-provoking. McDermott is a master artisan of humanity.” -- Lori Feathers, Interabang Books, Dallas, TX
