Robert Brown ’15 Chosen for 2018 Philip Moore Award

Robert Brown
, a senior from Houston, is this year’s recipient of the Philip Moore Award. Robert served as Tau Chapter Grand Treasurer in 2018. He is a Management Information Systems major in the McCombs School of Business and is graduating December 2018. He will then begin working full-time at Saas Consulting Group in Austin.

Philip Moore
was known for his outstanding leadership, service and loyalty to his Tau brothers. A legacy who pledged with the Tau Chapter in 1966, he died in a car accident at age 29. The Texas Kappa Sigma Educational Foundation honors his memory each year by presenting the Philip Moore award to a senior who shares the high qualities of leadership, service and brotherhood for which Philip Moore is remembered.

Ben Broughton ’16 and Nicky Cumberland ’16 Awarded the Richard G. Miller Memorial Foundation Scholarship

Ben Broughton
, a junior from Dallas, is one of this year’s recipients of the Richard G. Miller Memorial Foundation Scholarship. Ben is the newly elected Tau Chapter Grand Master, having previously served as Risk Chairman. He is a third year Chemical Engineering major and has done summer internships in Japan and Chile to help broaden his knowledge and skills within the energy industry. Ben is also the 2018 recipient of the Gabe Higgins Award.

Nicky Cumberland
, who passed away October 30, was one of this year’s recipients of the Richard G. Miller Memorial Foundation Scholarship, awarded this past summer. Nicky was a junior in the Business Honors Program and Radio-Television-Film School, pursuing a triple major with a minor. Nicky served as a Tau Chapter Assistant Pledge Educator, was a Texas Cowboy, and was active in Young Life and UT Cheer. Nicky was loved dearly by his Tau brothers, who have adopted the phrase “Love Like Nicky” to cherish and honor his memory.

Richard Miller
recognized the development of leadership skills as the most important ingredient of success for any person or organization. Miller served as Tau Chapter Grand Master in 1939, was decorated for service in two wars, built a distinguished career as a businessman in his hometown of El Paso, Texas, served as Worthy Grand Master of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity at the national level and was honored as Tau Man of the Year in 1990. In 2006, the Richard G. Miller Memorial Foundation made a commitment to honor his memory each year through a scholarship to benefit outstanding leaders within the Tau Chapter.

Ben Broughton ’16 Chosen for Gabe Higgins Award

, a junior from Dallas, is this year’s recipient of the Gabe Higgins Award. Ben is the newly elected Tau Chapter Grand Master, having previously served as Risk Chairman and as Pledge Class President in 2016. He is a third year Chemical Engineering major and has done summer internships in Japan and Chile to help broaden his knowledge and skills within the energy industry.
Ben was also awarded one of the two Richard G. Miller Memorial Foundation scholarships earlier this year.

Gabe Higgins
is remembered for his calm and unassuming demeanor, his ready willingness to help a brother in need, and his good character. The Gabe Higgins award is given annually by the Texas Kappa Sigma Educational Foundation to a Tau Chapter junior who shares the good qualities for which Gabe Higgins was known.

Jake Kinnear ’17 Awarded Walt Schoenvogel Scholarship

Jake Kinnear
, a sophomore from Collierville, TN, is this year’s recipient of the Walt Schoenvogel Scholarship Award. Jake is one of the newly elected Rush Chairs for 2019. He is a Business Honors and Finance major in the McCombs School of Business.

Walt Schoenvogel
passed away earlier this year at the age of 63. Those who live in his hometown of Brenham knew him as a successful businessman, community leader, and philanthropist, but he is remembered by his Kappa Sig brothers as an exceptional athlete whose prowess helped bring intramural glory to Tau Chapter, and a loyal friend whose great sense of humor brought much happiness to those around him. To honor his memory, the Walt Schoenvogel Scholarship has been established to benefit a deserving Tau Chapter sophomore each year who aspires to meet the high standards and principles of
brotherhood, community service and philanthropy
by which Walt himself lived.

Rob Lippincott ‘67 Chosen for Frank Erwin Award
Tau Chapter actives selected Austin entrepreneur and business developer
Rob Lippincott
as this year’s recipient of the Frank Erwin Award, in recognition of his many years of generosity to the Chapter.
Rob was named Kappa Sigma Tau Man of the Year in 2015 and was previously chosen for the Frank Erwin Award in 2013. As a Kappa Sig undergraduate, he served as Tau Chapter Grand Master in 1970.
Rob and his wife, Cathy, created Guero's Taco Bar in 1986. One of Austin's most popular restaurants, Guero's became the anchor for the revitalization of South Congress Avenue, spearheaded by Rob.
Rob and Cathy have two daughters, Bette and Lyle, both who are actively involved in the family business.

Frank Erwin,
Chairman of the University of Texas System Board of Regents from 1966 to 1971, was a devoted Kappa Sig who served as an alumnus advisor and a founding trustee of the Texas Kappa Sigma Educational Foundation. He was honored as Tau Man of the Year in 1965 and again in 1980.
