Dear Kappa Sigma Tau Parents & Alumni,
Nicky Cumberland’s tragic death after his return from a Texas Cowboys event has prompted both the Tau Chapter and the Texas Kappa Sigma Educational Foundation to carefully take stock of practices that have occurred within our own purview.
The Code of Conduct
to which Kappa Sigma Fraternity Chapters subscribe (see below) clearly delineates practices that are inconsistent with the ideals of the Fraternity. Candidly, we believe we can do a better job aligning all of our practices with such ideals. By working closely with our national organization and Nicky’s father, Shawn Cumberland, who has graciously offered his help, we intend to
review and reshape the culture
going forward.
After careful consideration, the first action we have taken is
to suspend several Chapter social functions that were scheduled for the spring and modify several other upcoming events that are
purely philanthropic or
include parents
and alums
to be alcohol-free. We believe this pause will give us a chance to build an environment that reinforces the Fraternity’s pillars of Fellowship, Leadership, Scholarship, and Service, and that in so doing, we will lead the way for others. We trust you will understand and support these efforts.
A.E.K.D.B.,
