With tax season wrapping up, we want to take a moment to reflect on the critical role our Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) plays in supporting our communities. This time of year can be especially daunting for low-income individuals who face complex tax issues and struggles with IRS disputes. At Pine Tree Legal Assistance, we are committed to providing vital resources and legal representation to ensure that everyone understands their rights and can successfully navigate the tax system.

LITC assists low-income individuals with their tax-related challenges by providing free legal representation to eligible clients dealing with IRS disputes, such as unfiled returns and tax debts. This program helps taxpayers navigate the complexities of tax laws while ensuring they understand their rights and responsibilities. Our ultimate aim is to promote financial stability and empower individuals to regain control over their financial futures. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we can expand our services, delivering essential support to many individuals throughout Maine.

Outreach at the Southern Maine Women’s Re-entry Center

Recently the LITC team has been working with the Southern Maine Women’s Re-entry Center, which supports women transitioning from incarceration back into the community. In November 2024, the first visit took place, providing essential tax information to the women there. As a result of this assistance, Pine Tree helped four women file unfiled federal and state tax returns, leading to refunds totaling over $8,000!

The positive impact garnered the attention of the administration at the center, resulting in an invitation to return in February 2025. During this visit, assistance was provided to four additional women with their tax issues.

The Importance of Financial Relief for Women in Re-entry

For women at the Southern Maine Women’s Re-entry Center, resolving tax issues and obtaining financial relief is essential for numerous reasons. Financial support significantly enhances stability, allowing these women to focus on rebuilding their lives without the burden of tax liabilities. This relief fosters empowerment and independence, enabling them to regain control over their futures. Additionally, alleviating financial stress allows for concentrated efforts on personal growth, family reunification, and job readiness. Access to tax refunds also opens doors for investing in education, job training, or small businesses, ensuring successful reintegration into the community. Finally, resolving these financial challenges helps restore trust and strengthen relationships with family and friends, which is vital during this transformative period.

Other LITC Client Success Outcomes

These stories underscore the critical need for this program.

  • Debt Relief: One individual who faced the tragic loss of a spouse found themselves in a difficult financial predicament. Relying solely on Social Security, they struggled to manage an IRS debt exceeding $13,000, compounding emotional distress during an already challenging time. Pine Tree Legal Assistance successfully advocated on behalf of this client by submitting an offer in compromise—a special agreement that allows taxpayers to settle tax debts for less than the full amount owed. After thorough preparation and negotiation, the offer received approval, enabling resolution of the tax debt with a nominal payment of just $50. This significant reduction not only alleviated a heavy financial burden but also provided an opportunity for a fresh start, allowing focus on healing and building a more stable future.

  • Tax Refunds: Another individual faced the daunting task of catching up on taxes after several years of unfiled federal and state returns. Pine Tree Legal Assistance provided crucial help in preparing and submitting these unfiled tax returns through careful review and meticulous attention to detail. As a result, our client received a total refund exceeding $12,000 was received from the IRS. This unexpected financial relief is vital for restoring stability and allows for investments in the future—whether covering essential living expenses, paying down debt, or saving for educational opportunities. This opportunity to regain financial footing enables a positive and hopeful path forward.

These success stories highlight the profound impact of support, demonstrating essential assistance provided to individuals facing financial challenges and reminding them they are not alone. Heartfelt gratitude goes to each supporter for being a vital part of the journey toward justice in Maine and for empowering meaningful change in clients' lives.

Growing Demand

The success of our initiatives has generated considerable interest among women at the Southern Maine Women’s Re-entry Center, with five additional individuals reaching out for help with their unfiled returns. To meet this growing demand, regular visits are being planned to provide ongoing support, all made possible through your generosity and grants. To continue this essential work, more volunteer licensed tax preparers are urgently needed to assist in filing unfiled returns. If willing to contribute time and skills, please contact Pine Tree staff attorney Caleb Gannon at cgannon@ptla.org.

Thank you for your support of Pine Tree Legal Assistance. Your generosity enables us to help individuals navigate their tax challenges and achieve greater financial stability. We appreciate your commitment to our mission and look forward to sharing more about the positive impact of your contributions in the future!

Pine Tree Legal is honored to partner with Sexual Assault Response Services of Southern Maine (SARSSM) to raise awareness about the profound impact of sexual violence and the critical need for community support.

This Sexual Assault Awareness Month emphasizes the vital role of the law in protecting the rights of individuals affected by sexual violence. Legal protections enable survivors to seek justice and access essential resources, including protective orders, counseling, and legal representation. A thorough understanding of legal rights empowers individuals to navigate the system effectively, ensuring they receive the necessary support and are able to pursue justice.

In recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, SARSSM will host a fundraising event Spring Melt 2025 on April 24th. This event will establish a new tradition that emphasizes resilience and community connection. We extend the invitation to everyone to join this important gathering, reinforcing the commitment to support survivors across Maine.

Members of the Maine Bar can support PTLA’s work by donating to the Campaign for Justice, a special collaborative fundraising effort by

Maine’s legal community to support legal aid.

One illustration of our collaborative efforts to advocate for our clients, uphold our mission, and support our team was our work at the State House for Access to Justice Day on April 17, 2025. This annual tradition allowed Pine Tree and six other civil legal service providers to engage with legislators and their staff, sharing information about our initiatives, the positive impact we have on individuals in Maine, and the funding needed to sustain our work.

This year’s Access to Justice Day featured legal aid providers and our allies in the Justice Action Group taking meaningful action. Pine Tree staff played a key role in organizing a press conference that attracted significant attention from media outlets across Maine.
