Sheridan Hughes with her husband, Hunter
In The Florida Bar boardroom
With her daughter, Hendrix
Please join us in welcoming Sheridan Hughes, the Tax Section's new Florida Bar Program Administrator. Sheridan has worked with the Bar for more than three years. She began as the Assistant to the Director of Professional Development and recently was promoted to the Program Administrator position. You can reach Sheridan at shughes@floridabar.org or 850-561-5625.

These Q & A's will help you get to know Sheridan:

  • What are your hobbies? I am a huge foodie! If I’m not out at the newest specialty restaurant in town, I’m cooking up something new and exciting in my own kitchen. I love meal kits that allow for trying flavors I might not have chosen myself. I have also been a bartender for years, so I enjoy creating craft cocktails that complement the flavors of the food.
  • How do you like to relax after a long day? I like to relax with a bourbon on the rocks and great conversation around the fire pit, especially in the winter. I also enjoy playing fetch and stealing all of the cuddles from my two sweet pups, and of course getting to love on my sweet little girl, Hendrix!
  • What are you most looking forward to as the section’s new Program Administrator? I am most looking forward to forming a great relationship with the section and learning all of the amazing personalities in play within the section. This group is so dynamic and I am going to truly enjoy getting to know everyone and pushing the section to be the best it possibly can.
  • What is your dream vacation? My dream vacation would consist of an out-of-country trip to South Island, New Zealand. There are gorgeous mountains, fjords, and glaciers to explore including two of the world’s most accessible glaciers. If you love beautiful scenery and have an adventurous side, it is absolutely worth checking out!
Free CLE for Tax Section Members
Thursday, Feb. 18, 12-1 PM on Zoom, presented by Steven M. Hogan. When a business is audited by the Florida Department of Revenue, the question of what records are produced and what story they tell is the first thing a lawyer must attend to. The question of how records are kept and whether they meet the taxpayer’s statutory duties is a key issue in how the audit will turn out. This presentation will address the “battle of the records” and how the outcome impacts the Department’s ability to assess tax based on an estimate or a sampling methodology.

Approved for 1 General CLE credit. Tax Section members free; non-section members $75 (includes Tax Section membership). The Zoom join link will be provided to registrants prior to the presentation. The registration cutoff is 11:30 a.m. on the date of the presentation.
Available 24/7 on the Section's YouTube Channel
The Tax Section's monthly free CLE series is a benefit of your section membership. Now that the CLEs are recorded on Zoom, we have made them available to you online so you can watch or listen at any time. The latest additions to the section's YouTube Channel are:

2021 National Tax Moot Court Competition
The time for the 2021 National Tax Moot Court Competition is fast approaching. Please help the competition by serving as a judge!

Given the current environment caused by COVID-19 and the general social distancing guidelines set out by the CDC, the Tax Section is joining with Stetson University College of Law to conduct the first ever virtual National Tax Moot Court Competition for 2021. While we are still finalizing some of the details, we anticipate that the competition will be held through a Zoom meeting format. While many individuals have become familiar with Zoom meetings, we also plan to have a “judges only” orientation to discuss the new virtual competition format and rules (at a date and time TBD).

The competition brings together (virtually) 16 teams from law schools around the country to compete on a tax-related topic. It will be held virtually from April 1-2, 2021. Serving as a judge is a very rewarding experience and it involves a minimal time commitment. For those willing to serve, we will provide you with a copy of the problem and a bench brief to assist you in preparing for your service as a judge.

Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credit will be provided.

Please volunteer to judge any of the following oral argument rounds (feel free to sign up for more than one round):

Rounds/dates, judge arrival times and approximate departure times:

Round 1: Thursday, April 1 (morning), 8:45 AM–12:15 PM
Round 2: Thursday, April 1 (afternoon), 1:15 PM–4:30 PM
Round 3: Friday, April 2 (morning), 8:15 AM–12:30 PM
Round 4: Friday, April 2 (afternoon), 1:30 PM–4:30 PM
If you would like to serve as a judge for the competition or have any questions, please reply to this email or contact us at justin.wallace@hwhlaw.com or (813) 506-5137. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Best regards,

The liaison meetings will offer six to eight CLE hours depending on the length of the program. Don’t miss your chance to participate in these section-members-only IRS liaison meetings, a benefit of your Tax Section membership.
Hall of Champions Interview With William R. Lane, Jr.
The purpose of the Florida Bar Tax Section's “Hall of Champions” Interview Series is to record and preserve the wisdom of those lawyers who have meant so much to the development of tax law and policy in Florida.

January 28 LRP and Directors' Committee Meetings
Thank you to the Tax Section Officers, Directors and sponsors, who helped make last week's virtual Long Range Planning and Directors' Committee meetings productive and fun. Section Chair Mike O'Leary started the Directors' meeting by introducing Gary Lesser, a candidate for Florida Bar President-Elect Designate, who shared his vision and mission for the Bar's future. We then tackled a busy agenda with reports from each section committee and updates on section projects. We also welcomed our new Program Administrator, Sheridan Hughes, who is off to a great start as our liaison to The Florida Bar.

The day concluded with a fabulous virtual wine-tasting and remarks from our sponsors. Thank you to all who joined us online last week.

Lisa Gallagher’s batch of beignets
Thank you to Immediate Past Section Chair Janette McCurley, who put together the wonderful “swag” boxes that were mailed to members of the Directors’ Committee. Because the Directors would have been meeting in New Orleans last week, the boxes contain Mardi Gras-themed goodies, gifts from section sponsors MPI, Coral Gables Trust and Kaufman Rossin, and King Cakes sponsored by Carlton FieldsAdministration Division Assistant Director Lisa Gallagher shared a photo of her first batch of beignets, baked with the mix included in the swag boxes.
