Tax Talk

What Indiana’s tax cuts mean for Union County

Week 2

Federal cuts could impact the number of students eligible for free or reduced-priced meals. These changes could lead to more students losing access to free meals and a need for schools to find alternative ways to support students who need nutritious meals during the school year and summer.

Additionally, Indiana opted out of the federal SUN Bucks program, which provides direct payments to families of eligible children during the summer. Families who benefit from reduced-price school meals got a summer time boost: $120 a month for food while schools were closed.

Data for Union County Free and Reduced School Meals for 2024

College Corner Union Elementary 45%

Liberty Elementary 50%

Union County Middle School 53%

Union County High School 45%

The State Library will see a 30% cut from Indiana funding. The Union County Public Library depends upon the state library to coordinate summer reading programs. This program is a crucial element of childhood literacy in a state that needs to increase reading scores.

The Union County Public Library wishes to see our community thrive! A 30% cut at the state level would devastate essential services, limiting access to information, educational resources, and community support for all of us here in UC.

There is not enough space in this article to talk about all the programs UCPL offers us! Their services go beyond the bookshelf as they work towards the direct needs of our community.

One area they cover is making sure no one goes hungry.

Once a month they host Reminisce which is a hot meal, game of bingo, and a light educational/entertainment program for senior citizens. They typically see around 50-75 attendees.

All summer, they serve breakfast and lunch to our children. On average, they serve 100 meals a day.

They recently started serving pop up meals to West College Corner. They typically prepare 60 meals.

As a foundation, we continually try to support these programs for the library and help the schools with whatever additional needs they may have. This comes from many funds that we have set up here, whether it be designated directly to the schools or unrestricted funds that are awarded every grant cycle. Growing these funds only help enrich these programs making sure they last during uncertain times like we are experiencing.

Ways you can help!
