What Indiana’s tax cuts mean for Union County

Week 4

ALICE: Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed- households that earn more than the Federal Poverty Level, but less than the basic cost of living for the county.

ALICE in Union County 2023 Data

Population: 7,028

Number of Households: 2,852

Median Household Income: $79,500

Labor Force Participation Rate: 65.4%

ALICE Households: 24%

Households in Poverty: 7%

The average cost of living for a 4 person household a month in Indiana is $4,631. This includes cost for housing, health, transportation and food. At that rate, the families annual earnings are $55,000 a year. This does not include many cost families also see like childcare, schooling, sports, other unforeseen bills.

If a family of 4 makes $57,720 a year, they are considered to be above the federal poverty line. That’s only an additional $2,000 a year added to the average cost of living. As you can see from the chart above, these families do not qualify for SNAP, WIC, Free or Reduced meals at school.

As of December 2024, 271 households in Union County received SNAP benefits. A large portion of our ALICE population are people over 65. With a fixed monthly income, they do not have enough to cover the basic cost of living. 25-44 year olds have the highest poverty percentage.

Over the past weeks, we’ve taken a closer look at how statewide funding cuts are affecting vital programs from our community. These cuts aren't just numbers on a spreadsheet; they represent fewer resources for students, reduced support for vulnerable families, and growing pressure on already-strained local organizations.

But there is hope — and it begins with us.

While we may not be able to reverse state-level decisions overnight, we can take meaningful steps to protect and uplift our communities. One powerful way to do that is by supporting your local community foundation.

All 92 counties in Indiana have strong rooted community foundations that are uniquely positioned to identify the most urgent needs, respond quickly, and invest in long-term solutions. When you give locally, your dollars stay local — helping neighbors, strengthening nonprofits, and ensuring essential programs continue to serve those who rely on them the most.

Now more than ever, your support matters.

Let’s turn concern into action. Let’s come together to keep Indiana communities strong, resilient, and thriving — for everyone.

Give local. Give where it matters.
