Now that most tax returns have been filed (with the exception of those who filed for an extension), we move into the time of the year when some people may get communication from the IRS about possible errors or omissions in their tax return.
The first thing we should note is that if such communication occurs, it will always come in the form of a letter rather than a phone call. If you get a phone call from somebody claiming to be from the IRS, it is a scam and you should ignore it.
Secondly, although it may be alarming to get a letter from the IRS, there is no need to panic. Simply bring the letter to us, and we will help you resolve the matter at no additional charge (assuming we prepared your tax return). Usually, these letters pertain to matters that can be quickly resolved, especially with our assistance.
