Tay Township News & Notes

June 2024

Message from the Mayor

June has been an eventful month filled with progress and community spirit. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our Tay Township Horticulture Committee for their exceptional dedication in enhancing our township with numerous beautiful gardens. Their efforts have truly enriched our surroundings and brought joy to all who pass through.

A particularly special addition is the new Indigenous Garden at the Municipal Office, unveiled with a meaningful smudging ceremony earlier this week. This garden stands as a testament to our commitment of preserving and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of our region. In addition, I had the privilege of attending the blessing of the gardens at the Martyrs Shrine, which integrated spiritual, cultural and environmental elements into a meaningful ceremony.

On June 15th, Tay Bike Day saw an incredible turnout as cyclists of all ages joined us for a day filled with fun activities. A sincere thank you to our volunteers and to everyone who participated, enjoyed the BBQ, and ensured their safety with helmet checks.

Tay Township Council and Staff celebrated National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21st with a flag raising at the Municipal Office. In the afternoon, I had the privilege of attending the 21st Anniversary of the Traditional Pow Wow, a vibrant gathering hosted by the Georgian Bay Native Friendship centre and held at Ste. Marie Among the Hurons. It was a wonderful day, bringing awareness to the unique culture, traditions and contributions made by Indigenous peoples, not only in the Heart of Georgian Bay, but all across Canada.

Looking ahead, I invite you all to join us for our upcoming Tay Canada Day celebrations, starting Friday, June 28th at 4pm. This festive occasion promises music, a parade, talented artisans, and much more for the whole family to enjoy. Check out taycanadaday.ca for further details.

Lastly, a reminder that our Municipal Office will be closed on Monday, July 1st in observance of Canada Day, reopening on Tuesday, July 2nd at 8:30 am. For any after-hour emergencies related to Water, Wastewater, Roads, or Parks, please call 705-526-5762.

As we approach the long weekend, I encourage everyone to stay safe and enjoy this time with family and friends.

Until next time, Mayor Ted Walker twalker@tay.ca.

Temporary Shelter Structures Survey

Tay Township is in the process of gathering information for the potential of permitting temporary shelter structures.

What is a temporary shelter structure?

A temporary shelter is any temporary structure with or without side panels, the covering of which is made of pliable material, such as plastic or fabric, that achieves its shape by air support, air inflation, or tension. Structures are often called portable garage, carport or shelter.

The current Township policies consider these types of structures as accessory structures and they must meet the zoning by-law requirements for accessory structures, which is the same as a detached garage.

We want to hear from you! Please fill out the survey to help guide direction for permitting temporary shelter structures in Tay Township.

The survey is open to all residents, stakeholders and community members. You can also pick up a hard copy of the survey in the vestibule of our Municipal Office at 450 Park Street, Victoria Harbour during regular business hours Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The survey will close on July 24, 2024. More information can be found at tay.ca/input.

Beach Water Testing

Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit

Did you know the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) tests the water quality at the following local beaches?

  • Albert Street Beach
  • Mackenzie Park Beach
  • Magnus Beach
  • Patterson Park Beach
  • Waubaushene Beach

Between June and September (Labour Day weekend) the SMDHU collects water samples from public beaches within Simcoe and Muskoka. They test the water samples for levels of E. coli bacteria. When elevated levels of E. coli are present in the water samples, the beach may be posted with an advisory warning indicating it is unsafe for swimming, or the beach may be closed. Bacteria levels can increase in recreational beach water due to heavy rainfall, cloudy water, a large number of swimmers, a large number of birds, shallow water, wet sand, wind and high waves.

Bookmark this page and make sure to check the water quality before you head out for a swim!
