Teach Us to Pray

It can be hard to pray sometimes. That may sound like a strange thing for a priest to say, but it’s the truth. Sometimes the tragedies and cruelties of the world can work their way inside us, spreading like a shadow over our souls, until we can’t remember where the Light is, let alone try to direct our prayers toward it.

Or perhaps we never really felt like we were “doing it right,” and then when life got hard and our little efforts to pray didn’t seem to make much difference, we just stopped.

For all sorts of reasons, it can be hard to pray sometimes, which makes this weekend’s gospel story so important.

One day Jesus returned from praying by himself, something he did quite often, and one of the disciples asked him to teach them to pray, too. Keep in mind that they had been traveling with Jesus for months, hearing him teach with authority about God and witnessing him wield divine power. They were Jesus’ closest companions, and while imperfect, they possessed a capacity for faith big enough to one day sacrifice their own lives for it. And yet, here they are, wondering what Jesus is doing when he goes off to pray.

Summer Pool Party

Figs With Kids (FWK) invites families with young children to come hang out and swim at Greenwood Hills Community Club Pool with all your FWK friends, tomorrow Saturday, July 26 from 10:00am - Noon!

There will be donuts, coffee, and juice and a lot of fun to be had by all.

Cost is $10/adult and $5/child payable when arriving at the event. Please register so we know how many to expect. You will find the address in the registration.

Little Pantry

Help us keep the little free pantry outside the church entrance stocked with critical supplies for our neighbors in need.

We need individuals or families to sign-up to be responsible for a week at a time starting with the month of August.

The Fig Outreach Bake-Off

Sign-Up to Bake By August 3

On Sunday, August 10, we will hold our annual Outreach Bake-Off. Whether you’re a chef extraordinaire or a confectionery connoisseur, we hope you'll be there. Bakers are asked to register by next Sunday, August 3, using the button below.

Attend and Support

Those who are not baking should plan to attend on August 10 to vote for their favorite entries and enjoy the many samples.

Proceeds from this year's Bake-Off will benefit the Diocese of West Texas' central Texas flood relief efforts.

New Foyer Participant Sign-Up

It's almost time to reveal the Fall Foyer Groups! If you did not participate in the Spring Foyer Groups, we invite you to join us for the next cycle of the Foyer Group Ministry! Please register to be added by August 3. Foyer Groups are randomly-sorted groups of 6-10 people that host meals, share in fellowship, and are an excellent way to meet people here at Transfiguration! 

If you were already included in the Spring 2025 cycle, you will automatically be enrolled for Fall 2025 unless you requested to be removed.

Fall Foyer Group assignments will be announced on August 17 at a festive gathering from 4:00pm to 6:00pm in Roper Hall. Bring a snack and your favorite beverage and join us for food, faith and fellowship! Attendance at the kickoff is not required but strongly encouraged. Those that do not attend the kickoff in-person may have fewer options when selecting calendar dates for hosting a dinner.

Vestry & Convention Delegate

Application Deadline Approaches

If you would like to be a part of the Vestry or to serve as a representative of this congregation at the Diocesan Convention, now is the time to submit your application. The deadline to submit your application to serve on Vestry is August 4 and the deadline to be considered as a Convention Delegate is August 24. To view the eligibility requirements for each role and to submit your application online, click the button below.

Fig Youth Backpack Drive

Help the Fig Youth collect backpacks and school supplies for the Family Place. We will fill the backpacks at the Youth lock-in, to then be blessed on Sunday, August 17 at the Blessing of the Backpacks. They will be delivered the next day.

Supplies can be ordered from our Amazon wish list using the button below and they will be delivered directly to the church. Please note “Attn: Fig Youth” when you order. You may also drop off any new or unopened school supplies at the designated area in the Tower Cloister. 

All Supplies should be received no later than August 10

As we move toward the later part of the Summer and an energetic Fall, here are some events of note. Details will follow as we approach these dates.

Youth Lock-in August 15

Let’s start the year off right with our annual lock-in on Friday, August 15 starting at 6:00pm ending Saturday, August 16 at 8:00am. Events during the lock-in will include swimming, games, movies, etc. Please bring a sleeping bag and a pillow and be prepared for a great night! We will conclude the lock-in with a yummy breakfast! There are registration opportunities for Lock-in attendees and Adult Chaperons.

Deadline to register is end of day Wednesday, August 13.

Volunteers are needed for the second and fourth Mondays of the month to work in the back of the store sorting and pricing clothes. Keep the donations coming! We need summer handbags at the present time. Please let us know if you are able to help even one time.
