“Everyone can’t be a star, but when you have a teacher and music director like Mr. Hurst, everyone can be somebody. That has a ripple effect for a better community and society.”

Mr. Matthew Hurst
We are excited to announce this year's recipient of the Teacher Excellence Award, Mr. Matthew Hurst. Each year this award is given to one teacher in Henry County for going above and beyond in the classroom.
After receiving several nominations, a committee of three judges from outside of the county chose the winner.
Mr. Hurst is the lead choir director at New Castle Community Schools. During this year's presentation of their Spring Sing performances, Mr. Hurst was pulled onto the stage and surprised with the award.
Once the concert ended, Mr. Hurst reflected on what this award means to him, “I am honored and deeply humbled by the Community Foundation’s choice. I push my students daily to be better individual singers, and together be a better choir than the day before,” he said. ‘It’s truly about the growth. The kids grow in confidence, grow in musical successes, and in turn, the program grows. But it’s the little daily victories that give me the most joy. Perhaps someday, one of my own students will earn this award as well!”

Donor Impact Made through Fund Flexibility
|
So, what is a donor advised fund (DAF), and what makes it special?
Donor advised funds are a unique way for individuals and families to help address the evolving needs in Henry County. These funds are a flexible option and are great for donors who want to play a more active role in grantmaking.
They allow donors the opportunity to recommend charitable organizations to receive grants and to work with the Foundation to identify local projects that could benefit.
Another remarkable aspect of the DAF is the ability to respond quickly to local needs. DAFs can be used to support everything from emergency response efforts to community economic development.
Who can be a part of the donor advised fund process?
