Mt. Vesuvius Erupts
The prosperous, decadent, and vibrant cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum were completely destroyed by the volcanic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius on this day in the year 79AD.  A 10-mile mushroom cloud of ash and pumice rained down upon the region for 18 hours as recorded by Pliny the Younger. Many fled but thousands died.  Pompeii and Herculaneum would not be rediscovered until the 18th century giving historians an incredible glimpse of the scale of the disaster. Mt. Vesuvius is the only active volcano on the European mainland.

Teacher Training Week
Our teachers were treated to wonderful training sessions last week conducted by Dr. Ken Calvert of Hillsdale College and Hillsdale Academy and Dr. Mindy Rutherford of Ohio University.

Dr. Calver t met with our faculty and staff to plumb the depths of
our school's mission.  He led an in-depth discussion of the methodology and tools we use to promote classical learning in all aspects of what we do at school - whether it is the artwork in the halls, the language we use, the texts we select, or the music we teach.  He then held one-on-one sessions with our teachers and reviewed lesson planning with them. Dr. Calvert is the Headmaster at Hillsdale Academy and also a professor at Hillsdale College in Michigan.

Dr. Rutherford was our second presenter of the week.  The teachers benefited from her insights on classroom manage ment and instructional strategies.  They also explored with her best practices for differentiated learning.  Dr. Rutherford teaches Learning, Human Growth and Development in the education department at Ohio University.

Both o f these presenters met with our staff last year as well.  We are grateful that they were willing to give of their time to join us again thi s year.
Matriculation Ceremony
Our Matriculation Ceremony will be held on Monday, August 31 at 8:45 am and will conclude by 9:30 am. Parents and grandparents are invited to attend. We will gather in the gym.
The first day of school is not merely the beginning of a new school year. It is the day we commit our very best efforts to our studies, to the pursuit of truth, and to our growth in virtue. Thus, on Matriculation Day students, parents, and teachers matriculate in the mission of our school.
Our ceremony will begin with an invocation, a flag ceremony, and the singing of the national anthem.  New students and parents will sign their names in the Matriculation Book, and then all will recite the Academy Oath.
We look forward to seeing you there.
