Hands-on open lab coaching sessions are now available for Algebra I & English I teachers.

The Department of Curriculum & Instruction is offering Open Lab sessions for Algebra I and English I teachers. These open lab sessions are designed to provide in-depth coaching, deconstruction of standards, planning support and opportunities for deliberate practice with your peers. Take a look at session overviews for Algebra 1 and English I to get more session details and available dates and times. November and December sessions will be held at Kirby High School from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m.  Register for your preferred session in PLZ.

The C & I English-Language Arts Department is excited to share the K-8 EL Resource List , a new resource that captures all of the supporting curricular materials for K-8 teachers who teach EL content. This comprehensive list is a one-stop shop for EL education tools, including K-5 and 6-8 curriculum maps and supporting documents to remind teachers of the various materials available to guide implementation of the curriculum.
The Universal CLUE screening process is underway. Check out updates on our progress!

Our first benchmark assessment on Illuminate/FastBridge identified 4,500 students who will move on to the second phase of tests required to begin the CLUE application process. Parents and schools will be notified of next steps before winter break. To learn more about the program, take a look at this short overview video .

The underrepresentation of African American men in education not only negatively affects students of color, but all students who enter the classroom. The Secure the Chalk Educator Fellowship is a professional membership and activist organization dedicated to advancing the recruitment, development and retention of Black male educators in schools throughout the Greater Memphis Area. The fellowship aligns with Priority 3 of the  African American Male Empowerment  campaign. Join us for our next meeting tomorrow at 6:30 p.m., at The Pocket (115 Union Ave.).

Mark your calendar for Dec. 3, then tell a friend, do some shopping and get excited about our District's annual winter giving campaign,  Operation Warm Hearts. We're celebrating #GivingTuesday 2019 by collecting NEW winter gear for students in our District. Join us for the big collection day on Dec. 3 at the BOE to donate coats, gloves, scarves and more to keep our students warm this winter!
Here's a cool way to make ELA interesting for your high school students!

Are you looking for a fun way to engage your high school students in literacy? What about helping them earn some cash? If you said yes to those questions, check out the Memphis Soul Prize city-wide poetry contest . The contest is part of a creative writing extra-curricular program that encourages students to embrace the positive aspects of our community. In addition to a fun approach to literacy, the contest comes with prizes for the top school, teacher and student! Students must have a teacher sponsor to participate in the contest. MSP will host an info meeting for interested teacher-sponsors on  Thursday, Dec. 5, at Central High .   RSVP for the info session here if you are interested in hosting this contest at your school!
Register your world language class for the 2020 University of Memphis Foreign Language Fair.

The University of Memphis will host its annual World Language Fair in March 2020 to celebrate world  languages in education. While there's still plenty of time between now and March, the team at U of M wants you and your students to register early for the big event! Sign up now, and get excited about the various contests and activities your students can participate in, including a foreign language knowledge bowl, vocabulary quizzes, costume design and more.  Languages, including Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Latin, Russian and Spanish, will be spotlighted during the event.
