March 2026 | Issue 54

Let us help you!

As you work your way through the term, I want to flag a few quick updates designed to make accessibility and course prep easier.

First, you may have noticed a new S icon in Canvas. That is SensusAccess, a new tool that helps convert files into alternate, more accessible formats.

I also want to share a new Flash FLO on tables. Tables can be one of the quickest places for accessibility issues to show up, and this short video walks through how to build and format them so they work cleanly with assistive technology.

Finally, we are nearing the deadline for two opportunities: If you have been considering a Faculty Forum proposal, this is the moment to submit and share what you have been testing or improving in your teaching! And if the Faculty Leadership Academy has been on your radar, applications are closing soon. I hope you will take advantage of both!

Thank you for the work you do every day for our students.

YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED: SensusAccess

The 'S' is for 'SensusAccess'!

This format fixer is here to save your documents... and your time!

If you’ve noticed a small “S” icon appearing in Canvas lately, that symbol marks SensusAccess—a self-service tool that can quickly convert course files into alternate, more accessible formats.

You (or your students) can use it to turn Word, PowerPoint, PDF (including scanned/image-only PDFs), images of text, and other common files into options like tagged PDF, Word/HTML/text, MP3 audio, DAISY structured audiobooks, e-books (EPUB/Kindle formats), digital Braille, and more.

In short: if you have a “problem” file, clicking the S gives you a fast way to generate a usable alternative without extra software.

DON'T MISS IT: March CETL Panel

CETL Panels are informal discussions with content experts on trending educational topics. All topics and discussion questions come directly from Reynolds faculty! View our calendar for more.

Reaching the Unreachable Student

This panel discussion focuses on practical strategies for engaging the students who are hardest to connect with.

Panelists will share approaches for building rapport, increasing participation, and supporting follow-through, along with small shifts you can make in communication, course design, and day-to-day interactions.

Leave with concrete ideas you can adapt right away, whether you’re teaching in person, online, or somewhere in between.

Have general questions you want addressed by the panel?* Let us know!

This way, participating faculty will have their classes fully up-to-date before the Title II deadline.

CETL will provide 3 one-hour open office sessions per month (online, at PRC, and at DTC) as well as Flash FLOs and additional content per topic. Here's the schedule of topics for each month:

  • OCTOBER: Heading Text
  • NOVEMBER: Using Color
  • DECEMBER: Contrast
  • JANUARY: Hyperlinks
  • FEBRUARY: Captioning / Transcripts
  • MARCH: Creating Accessible Tables

FAQ: Accessibility Panel

Have a question?

You're not the only one!

Last month, CETL hosted a panel focused entirely on the accessibility questions we get from faculty most often, and we kept the conversation practical and realistic.

The recording is now available, and it is a quick way to get clear answers, avoid common pitfalls, and walk away with next steps you can actually use in your course.

LEARNING TOGETHER: Enrichment Reading Group

Join us for our Enrichment Book Club in Spring 2026!

We'll be reading Imagination: A Manifesto by Ruha Benjamin, a Professor of African American Studies and the founder of the Ida B. Wells Data Lab at Princeton University.

In this book, Benjamin explores ways that a different kind of A.I.--Abundant Imagination--could prove to be a useful tool for education and human flourishing, even in the midst of the current techno revolution.
