Time to Share Green Book Site Memories and Photos

Shamele Jordon, project manager, is leading a team documenting the Negro Motorist Green Book locations in Lawnside and Berlin. This guide was first published in 1936 to list safe places for African Americans traveling during the segregation era. Lawnside and Berlin businesses were listed in multiple editions.

You can help breathe life into these long-gone people and places that landed both towns in the guide by sharing memories, mementos and photos. The sites include the Acorn Inn, Dreamland, Henry Smith's Barbershop, Hi-Hat Inn, Inman Inn, La Belle Inn, Lawnside Inn, Lawnside Park, Newton's Service Station, Thelma Thomas Salon, Wilcox Cafe and the Tippin Inn.

If you want to participate, have questions or suggestions, reach out to researcher@petermotthouse.org or ‪(856) 335-5156. Click the image above to register.

Revolutionary War Sign to be Installed

In Memoriam: Hugh Braithwaite

The Lawnside Historical Society was saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Hugh Braithwaite, founder of Braithwaite Communications of Philadelphia. He generously committed company resources and talented associates to create branding, media campaigns, videography and design help to promote the Peter Mott House Underground Railroad Museum. We offer sincere condolences to his family and colleagues. Hugh is at left in the photograph taken when they visited last year.

Society Receives Humanities Grant

The New Jersey Council for the Humanities awarded the Society a grant of up to $5,000 for a community history project on the impact of building the N.J. Turnpike and Interstate 295 through Lawnside. We need volunteers. More details to come.
