The American Birkebeiner is the single largest ski race in North America with over 10,000 racers competing in the 50, 30, and 15km distances. Luckily the great state of Alaska is always well represented by our APU Nordic athletes Elite to Alum and Masters! This year’s Birkie was held on perfect conditions with a firm track, sunny skies, and temperatures climbing from 3F at the start to nearly 30F by noon! The women’s wave went out first at 8:30am from Telemark Lodge outside of Cable, WI. The top women stayed together for almost the entire race with only a few seconds separating them at the finish line:
- Rosie Frankowski - 3rd
- Jessica Yeaton - 4th
- Sadie Bjornsen - 5th
- Rebecca Rorabaugh - 15th
In the men’s race, starting at 8:50am, had the top 15 athletes holding together until 40k when our own David Norris led the charge to separate the field. After repeated surges only the top few remained across the lake and unfortunately the Frenchman Gerard Agnellet out lunged David at the line for the win by a boot length.
- David Norris - 2nd (Top American)
- Tyler Kornfield - 6th
- Thomas O’Harra - 7th
- Erik Bjornsen - 9th
- Forrest Mahlen - 11th
We were especially lucky to have our Alumni Elite Erik and Sadie Bjornsen coming out of retirement to show they still have what it takes. Several of our Master Skiers also joined making for an awesome day for a ski race!
- Anna Engel - 27th 50k skate
- Shannon Brockman - 20th 55k classic
- Jim Falconer - 98th 55k classic
- Kathy Falconer - 52nd 29k classic

APU Nordic Trail Maintenance Party
|
|
APU Nordic skiers, coaches friends and family took on a shovel party on the Tour of Anchorage trail last Tuesday morning. Coach Galen sent out a last minute plea to our masters crew and we wound up with 9 intrepid shovelers out there for a few hours of trail remediation. The ice that was wonderfully ground up by NSAA groomers on the downhill from Randy’s loop down towards Abbott Loop Park now has a fresh layer of snow over it. Get out there and pack it down as you do your final Tour preparations for Saturday's Tour of Anchorage race. We are super excited for what’s looking to be a great Tour!

World Cup Continues In Drammen
|
|
Race Prep for World Cup Sprints in Drammen, Norway! Hailey Swirbul finished 36th and Rosie Brennan finished 12th overall. Here's a brief race recap! "Drammen is such a cool event and I really love doing the city sprint thing at least once during the season. It's been a few years since I've raced here and with so many improvements in my sprinting since then, I felt I could have a good day today. As with all city sprints, a big part of it is not getting too pushed around and that part I did a bad job of today. After a decent qualifier, I got way to pushed around and skied over in my quarterfinal to move on. I had a strong finish and thought maybe it was enough but I lost another lunge this weekend. It's always a tough way to get out because it's so close, but that is such a big part of sprinting. I guess I will have to work with master lunger Tyler and see if I can improve on those close finishes in the future. In the meantime, it's a fast turn around to Holmenkollen so I will be focusing on recovery. " We are looking forward to following the next races in Oslo!
