Show Your College Spirit Every Friday in October
|
|
|
|
Celebrate Career and College Success Month by wearing your favorite college gear every Friday in October! Use this opportunity to spark career and college conversations with students about your path after high school and the importance of planning for their futures, including considering college, vocational training, the military or a path that's right for them.
Capture the college spirit of your team with a photo or a screenshot and send it to Gary Cooper. Also, don’t forget to follow DPS on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to see how our students are preparing for success in their career and college journeys -- and add your stories to the celebration by tagging #MyPlanDPS.

5. “‘Organic Chemistry’ was one of my greatest failures and successes! Our teacher, Dr. Gallo, would create a list on the board of approximately 125 problems he said we should do to prepare for the test. They were not for homework and we would not receive points for doing them, so I didn't. After the first test, I went directly to the drop office and didn't even return to class to see my score. I took the class again the next semester with the same teacher and earned the highest grade in the class. That class taught me so much about perseverance and the work ethic required to achieve a long-term goal. Thanks, Dr. Gallo!” -- Katie Sams, Emily Griffith

4. “The capstone for my Spanish minor was a translation class in which each student had to translate a complete literary work from Spanish to English. I chose to challenge myself and translate something that had never been done before. I chose to translate my professor's doctoral thesis, which he originally defended in Spanish at the University of Arizona! I learned an incredible amount about the art and science of written translations. Most importantly, I had the privilege of working with his thesis on how architecture in Madrid influenced the Bohemian poets of the Spanish Modernist movement. I own a bound copy of our words --his writing in my translation -- and it is the best memento I have from college.” -- Celeste Borg, Abraham Lincoln

3. “Whenever I think about my favorite course in college, I think of ‘The History of the Spanish Language.’ I enjoy practicing Spanish regularly and learning from students, peers, and community members. This class was so fascinating because I learned a lot about different regional dialects of Spanish, as well as how languages develop and evolve. When I speak with multi language learners, I like to share this passion with them and encourage them to embrace and continue to improve their language skills in multiple languages.” -- Kirby Peterson, Cheltenham

2. “My favorite college course was surprisingly ‘Psychological Statistics.’ I never really had a passion for math before this class. Something about combining my love for how the brain works and math put my math education career in motion. This just reminds me that your passions can grow and change. Go all in and have a growth mindset because you never know what you might take away from something!” -- Anthony Bryant, Inspire

1. “The University of Northern Colorado offers many great courses, but the course I loved the most was ‘English Linguistic 401.’ Oddly enough, I loved this course because I struggled so badly on assignments and tests. It was incredibly frustrating but through this productive struggle, I gained the best advice ever: ‘Advocate for yourself and make sure your professor knows you and works to help you understand.’ After scheduling many office visits with the professor and much effort, I passed the class with a bare minimum C. Yet, it was the first time I really had to push myself to hold the instructor accountable for my success. The lesson of this story is to keep asking questions and advocating for yourself until you understand.” -- Sataira Douglas, Elementary Math Specialist

Madda Evenson
Operations Coordinator, CSCI
Integrity
"Madda is amazing is so many ways. She lives the value of Integrity as an operations coordinator by title but wears many hats. Madda supports our team as a grant administrator, hiring coordinator, extra duty pay support, translator, executive secretary and much more. Madda has taken on many roles and jumped in as people have transitioned away from DPS. There is literally nothing she does not say yes to and she always does it with a learner attitude, attention to detail and in a timely manner. Madda supports our small CRE team and the very large CSCI team with the utmost Integrity. It is a pleasure to work with Madda. She makes me proud to work for team DPS. Thank you Madda for ALL that you do. We are incredibly grateful!"
