Transitioning from Webmail to Gmail
Thanks to all of Team DPS for your support in this year's transition from Microsoft to Google. Since the switch, we've heard feedback and confusion around which email address team members should be using -- the dpsk12.org (Webmail) or dpsk12.net (Gmail). DoTS has been exploring the technical requirements and feasibility around streamlining and officially moving from Webmail to Gmail.

We're excited to announce that efforts to move forward with this transition are underway! Once we have transitioned, all dpsk12.org emails will still be accessed via Gmail, so you won't miss any communications from stakeholders.

Before the switch, please continue to use your dpsk12.org (Webmail) as your primary email. More instructions and resources around making a smooth transition to Gmail will be shared early next school year.
Top 5: Kid Quotes of the Year
Our kids always manage to put a smile on our face with the great things they say! We're sure going to miss hearing from them over the summer. Thank you to the team members who shared their favorite kid quotes of the year. Read the Top 5 below!
5. “We were learning about our five senses and I was trying to prompt my kindergarten student to share how he used his sense of touch at the aquarium. He had previously shared that he had eaten a hamburger for lunch there, so I tried prompting about lunchtime. However, his response was that he was being very careful to not get the Coronavirus so he ate his lunch with no hands like a dog.”
-- Chrystal Hernandez, Force
4. “My daughter Rebecca -- a third grader at McMeen -- walks into the library for the first time in over a year. She looks around in awe and says, ‘It's like Sora but in real life.’ Sora is our eBook platform that is available to all our DPS students.”
-- Amanda Samland, ETLS
3. “Mrs. Covington, I won't be in school on Wednesday. It's my birthday and my doctor says I'm going to have high blood pressure that day. It's not safe." -- Jessica Covington, DCIS at Ford
2. “First-grader: ‘Mrs. Carreno, you smell really nice today. Did you shower?’
Me: ‘Yes, I did.’ P.S. I think it was the hand lotion I had just put on.” -- Joy Carreno, Willow
1. “I am teaching students about making business plans and asked them to create a plan for a real or imagined business. L created an elaborate plan for a computer programming business, which impressed his classmates. When it was A's turn to present her business plan, she said, ‘I'm going to work for L!’” -- Barbara Laff, Gust
Top 5 Callout: Highlight of the Year
As we wrap up a school year unlike any other, we're asking all members of Team DPS to take a look back and send us your highlight of the year! From remote learning to in-person learning, share your favorite memories and photos through this form and we'll share them in next week's edition.
Reminder: Do Not Unplug Phones in DPS Buildings and Offices
The end of the school year is next week! At the end of the year and during the summer, phones are sometimes unplugged, which can lead to them being misplaced or lost. As a reminder, please do not unplug phones when leaving DPS offices and buildings for summer break. Misplaced or lost phones create extra cost for the district to replace, and are a safety concern if phones aren’t available in case of an emergency.

The DPS phone system will also be undergoing an upgrade over the summer in preparation for the conversion to Google. Phones need to be connected in order to receive necessary firmware updates, which allow them to function properly. If you have questions or concerns, please visit the DoTS Service Desk.

Living Our DPS Honoree
Samy Alkaihal
Newcomer Center Para,
Merrill Middle School
Equity

"Samy joined our Merrill family at the beginning of the second semester. He dived right in and has been an amazing support not only within our newcomer center, but within the whole school. Samy wanted to get involved with coaching this year and was given the position of the boys' soccer coach. The Shared Core Value he demonstrated was Equity. Never in my four years of working as a teacher in the newcomer center has any NC student been able to be involved in a sport.

Samy advocated and helped several Newcomer students get everything they needed so that they could be a part of tryouts. He even took them home afterwards and was happy to do so. Once the final roster came in, three of our NC students were on it! Samy was able to break down some of the barriers that have prohibited all students from being involved in afterschool activities. He created a positive change that I hope will continue not only at Merrill, but within every school in DPS."
