Treatment courts are successful because of the strong team approach to responding to client behavior. But what happens when team members slip into old practices and the team struggles to consistently apply best practices? During this session, you will hear from team members on how to strengthen the team relationship, how to ensure each member understands their role on the team, and how to improve communication and collaboration on your teams. We have a Q&A session at the end of our presentation.

Michelle Verdieu-Williams has served as the 1st Haitian American Chief Probation Officer for the Massachusetts’s Trial Court in the Charlestown Division of the Boston Municipal Court since 2011. Massachusetts in 1841 was the birthplace of Probation in the United States. Chief Williams holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Boston College and a Master of Arts in Criminal Justice from University of Massachusetts Lowell with a concentration in Public Policy and Family Violence. Chief Williams collaborates with local community organizations to assist her Probation Officers with supervision of the offenders. She serves as a mentor for her colleagues while organizing and participating in educational training opportunities for them.

Stephen Von Sitas, MS, is a Regional Treatment Court Coordinator for the State of Vermont Judiciary. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Sports Medicine from Keene State College and his Master of Science in Administration of Human Services from Chestnut Hill College. Stephen previously worked as a clinician, and case management supervisor with the Philadelphia Treatment Court. Stephen has been the Regional Treatment Court Coordinator in Chittenden County Vermont for seven years. He is also a member of the Vermont Substance Misuse Prevention Oversight and Advisory Council.

Heather Scheiwe Kulp, is an attorney, educator, and Circuit Court Administrator for the NH Judicial Branch, managing courts, access to justice projects, and the first family treatment court through an Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Program grant. Prior to this, Kulp was a Lecturer on Law at Harvard Law School (Negotiation Workshop, Dispute Systems Design Clinic, Lawyer as Facilitator) and Clinical Instructor at the Harvard Negotiation and Mediation Clinical Program. She began her legal career as a Skadden Fellow at Resolution Systems Institute in Chicago, where she designed court-connected dispute resolution programs for self-represented parties. She earned her law degree from Northwestern University School of Law and her B.A. from Saint Olaf College.
