In March, 128 students from 41 Schools advanced to the State Competition, held this year at UMass Lowell, where these 4 students earned the honor of representing Massachusetts at the 2024 National MATHCOUNTS Competition from May 11-13:

SPRING 2024: Our State’s Mathletes Traveled to Washingon, D.C.
The exciting 2023-24 MATHCOUNTS journey culminated as our state’s highest-scoring Mathletes traveled to Washington, DC as Team Massachusetts to compete among our nation’s 224 top student Mathletes.
Friday, May 10: The students flew to Washinton, D.C., accompanied by Coach Joshua Frost of Clarke Middle School and MA MATHCOUNTS Coordinator John Hayden, P.E., Sr. Transportation Engineer at Stantec, Inc. Following a metro ride to the hotel and a quick lunch, the team began practicing at a space in the hotel.

Sunday, May 12: The 224 National Competitors gathered in the morning to take Written Exams. Prior to starting, teams from each state, as well as the Virgin Islands, Guam, Puerto Rico, The District of Columbia, the State Department, and Department of Defense Schools sounded off with state cheers. This was followed by reading of the rules for all competitors.

Following the first grueling day of competition, our team was joined by Team Indiana for a well-deserved afternoon break that included a visit to the National Zoo.
Monday, May 13: All competitors gathered for the team results announcement, followed by the Countdown Round to determine the individual winner.
Out of 56 teams, Massachusetts earned Second Place, beaten only by Texas. California placed third. Since the first National MATHCOUNTS competition in 1984, Texas has won 9 times, California 8 times, and Massachusetts 5 times.
Based on the written tests, each Massachusetts student placed in the Top 25% of 224 total competitors. Rajarshi Mandal placed 45th, Brandon Ni placed 16th, Danyang Xu placed 13th, and Selena Ge placed second among the top 12 finishers, so she advanced to compete in exciting head-to-head Countdown Round to determine the individual champion.

MATHCOUNTS® national math enrichment program and competition series engages critical thinking and problem-solving skills of middle school students in grades 6-8.
MATHCOUNTS Programs…
...enable students who love math to prepare to be STEM leaders of the future
...equip students who fear math with problem solving and coping strategies
MATHCOUNTS Teaches MORE THAN MATH to Future Leaders and Employees
In addition to teaching students more math and problem-solving skills than they would typically learn in their formative middle school years, MATHCOUNTS teaches vital life lessons. A classic Forbes magazine article asked Fortune 500 company CEOs what they look for in their entry level and mid-level managers. The CEOs responded that they sought people who show up on time every day; know the subject they are hired for; come prepared for work; are self-starters and responsible for their work; and can work by themselves and as part of a team.
MATHCOUNTS teaches students critical life-skills. For example, if they show up late to a competition, they cannot compete. They must remember to bring pencils and calculators to help them. They must check their work. As competitors, they must work as individuals and as part of a team.
|
|
Run solely by the grass-roots efforts of volunteers and educators, Massachusetts MATHCOUNTS provides students in grades 6-8 with a valuable foundation for success in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers.

ENCOURAGE YOUR LOCAL MIDDLE SCHOOL TO PARTICIPATE
Contact your local middle school and ask if they participate in the program. If they do, congratulate them and offer any assistance you are comfortable with. If they do not participate, urge them to learn about the program by visiting the MATHCOUNTS website, www.mathcounts.org or the MATHCOUNTS section of mspe.com.
PLAN NOW TO VOLUNTEER IN FEB-MAR 2025
The MA Competition Schedule is published in late fall each year. At each of the 7 Chapter competitions in February, and the State Competition in March, opportunities range from proctoring to scoring the tests. No experience is necessary and training takes only minutes on the day of the event. Time commitments range from 3 to 5 hours on any competition day. There are also opportunities to serve as a Chapter Coordinator. Contact State Coordinator, John J. Hayden, P.E.
BUDGET NOW FOR TAX-DEDUCTIBLE DONATIONS
Every corporate sponsorship or individual contribution donated serves to directly support our student Mathletes. The MATHCOUNTS Foundation, a National Organization, supplies only about 1/3 of our State program’s operating costs. The balance comes from organizations, like the Massachusetts Society of Professional Engineers and other professional organizations, local companies and individuals.
ANY SIZE donation helps to fund & expand this vital program.
The MATHCOUNTS Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization and all donations are tax deductible. View or download the Sponsor or Donor Registration Form. For additional information, please visit the MATHCOUNTS website, the MSPE website, or contact State Coordinator John J. Hayden, P.E.
