MAY 2025: Our State’s Mathletes Traveled to Washingon, D.C.
The exciting 2024-25 MATHCOUNTS journey culminated as our state’s highest-scoring Mathletes traveled to Washington, DC as Team Massachusetts to compete among our nation’s 224 top student Mathletes.
Friday, May 9: The students flew to Washinton, D.C., accompanied by Coach Joshua Frost of Clarke Middle School and MA MATHCOUNTS Coordinator John Hayden, P.E., Sr. Transportation Engineer at Stantec, Inc. Following a metro ride to the hotel and a quick lunch, the team began practicing at a space in the hotel.
Saturday, May 10: Another day of preparation and practice. The team received their Competition Credentials and gifts from sponsors, like Title Sponsor RTX.
| | Sunday, May 11: The 224 National Competitors gathered in the morning to take Written Exams. Prior to starting, teams from each state, as well as the Virgin Islands, Guam, Puerto Rico, The District of Columbia, the State Department, and Department of Defense Schools sounded off with state cheers. This was followed by reading of the rules for all competitors. | | |
The Three Intense Rounds of Written Tests:
SPRINT ROUND: 30-question test to complete individually in 40 minutes with no calculators
TARGET ROUND: 4 pairs of questions and only 6 minutes to solve each pair with calculators
TEAM ROUND: Allows each 4-person team to collaborate and solve 10 questions in 20 minutes

Following the first grueling day of competition, our team enjoyed a well-deserved afternoon break that included a visit to the National Zoo.
Monday, May 12: All competitors gathered for the team results announcement, followed by the Countdown Round to determine the individual winner.
Out of 56 teams, Massachusetts earned FIRST Place. New York placed second and Washington placed third. Since the first National MATHCOUNTS competition in 1984, Massachusetts has earned first place four times and consistently placed in the Top 10.
Based on the written tests, each Massachusetts student placed in the Top 13% of 224 total competitors. Soham Samanta placed 27th, Eric Huang placed 26th, Shlok Mukind placed 8th and Brandon Ni placed 2nd. Shlok and Brandon advanced to compete among the top 12 finishers in the fiercely-competitive Countdown Round.

MATHCOUNTS® national math enrichment program and competition series engages critical thinking and problem-solving skills of middle school students in grades 6-8.
MATHCOUNTS Programs…
...enable students who love math to prepare to be STEM leaders of the future
...equip students who fear math with problem solving and coping strategies
MATHCOUNTS Teaches MORE THAN MATH to Future Leaders and Employees
In addition to teaching students more math and problem-solving skills than they would typically learn in their formative middle school years, MATHCOUNTS teaches vital life lessons. A classic Forbes magazine article asked Fortune 500 company CEOs what they look for in their entry level and mid-level managers. The CEOs responded that they sought people who show up on time every day; know the subject they are hired for; come prepared for work; are self-starters and responsible for their work; and can work by themselves and as part of a team.
MATHCOUNTS teaches students critical life-skills. For example, if they show up late to a competition, they cannot compete. They must remember to bring pencils and calculators to help them. They must check their work. As competitors, they must work as individuals and as part of a team.
| | Run solely by the grass-roots efforts of volunteers and educators, Massachusetts MATHCOUNTS provides students in grades 6-8 with a valuable foundation for success in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers. | | |
